I have just heard on BBC News that Alabama has passed a bill banning all abortions in all cases, even that of incest and rape. This is the most draconian of all the current bills passing through several States at present. The bill passed the Alabama Senate on a 25 to 6 majority, with 22 White Males voting against an exemption clause for rape and incest. It now goes to Republican Governor Kay Ivey for ratification. The bill proposes no criminal indictment for the women who obtain an abortion, but a 99 year sentence for any doctor who performs it. This is a first step in the intention to fully dismantle Roe v Wade in the Supreme Court, and Alabama’s Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth is quoted as saying that he is proud that Alabama is leading the way.

It is alarming that the USA seems to be lurching back into the nineteenth century, when the Catholic countries of Europe, Spain, Italy, France and most recently Ireland have thrown off the misogyny and suppression of women’s rights and have given them the choice whether to have an abortion or not. They have opted for equality and enlightenment in the twenty-first century. This rolling back of Women’s rights in the USA must be fought against by every woman and right thinking man in every State of the Union.

Leave Alabama and come north, ladies. We have jobs, peach trees and the rule of law.

It is alarming. I don't think you should worry about it too much. Alabama has a reputation for being backward, uneducated and I am led to believe most family trees go straight down with no branches.

The Gov of Alabama, a woman signed that horrific bill into law late last nite. She WILL RECIEVE BACK LASH. Her career is OVER and DONE.

Not necessarily....Alabama may largely agree with her. It is the Bible Belt!

3

This is a natural Trump diversion while they further divide, sack, and gut our country. Trump and his backers and followers firmly believe in divide and conquer.

And they are doing it most successfully!

Be aware America the Draconia Theocracies are fast approaching.

The Alabama governor signed the legislation. Breaking news 19 minutes ago on nytimes.

Fuck!

They believe that with a Trump Supreme Court they just need to get a case heard and they can count on taking down RvW bit by bit. We need to stay focused on winning the 2020 elections because that's what really matters. And we need to get all dems, liberals, and progressives behind whoever wins the nomination.

This sucks and all, but if you can afford an abortion then you can probably afford a bus ticket too, especially if it’s a one way ticket.

You will have to explain that remark Im afraid!

@Marionville I believe the comment means that women in Alabama will have to go another state to get an abortion if the law goes onto effect.

@ATDayHiker Their ultimate aim is to repeal Roe v Wade in the Supreme Court, so taking a bus ride will not be a solution....unless it’s up to Canada. In any case, they should be able to access an abortion clinic without having the inconvenience of having to travel to another state.

@Marionville. Rather than making abortion illegal in all states I believe it is more likely the Supreme Court could allow individual states to make it illegal if that is what they want to do (like Alabama). I can't see the progressive states being forced to abolish abortion without putting up a major fight.

@ATDayHiker let’s hope they do, if it gets that far.

I read an article somewhere online today that points out the consequences of such laws--ie, that business, and the educated, will either flee the state, or never go there to begin with.

Conversely, I'm beginning to think educated, progressive, successful people need to INVADE the red states en masse. Instead of retreating from the backwards areas, we need to embrace and transform them. But perhaps that is too idealistic of me.

@greyeyed123 I think red states should have their little Bible loving conservative paradise. I hope that all works out for them.

Are the cons always so mysogynist?

They seem to be getting worse.

On NPR they reported the the goal of hte bill is to establish the fetus as having the same right of living persons. Thjey almost added an amendment for exceptions of rape and incest, but that would not give them a "clean bill" in order to establish fetus rights and enable them to argue fetus versus the pregnant woman.

They didn’t almost add the exemption for rape and incest....it was defeated 22 to 9. All 22 who voted against the exemption were white men, as I outlined in the above. It is quite contemptuous of them to equate women with a bunch of cells, which are completely unviable outside of their own wombs.

@Marionville This issue will change quite a bit after artificial womb technology moves from the lab to the marketplace.

@bingst Explain about it to me if you can.

@Marionville My comments with links about it are here in a related topic: I think technology may eventually provide an answer to the abortion debate.

@bingst The artificial womb is still a long way off. As it stands we still are nto aware of all the hormones and chemicals within the human body. For an artificial womb to work we'd need to identify ALL of it and what is needed for proper development of a healthy fetus... which means experimentation with human embryos. And... there is the rub.

It is unlikely such technology can be perfected in our lifetimes without experiments on human embryos, which brings up scientific ethics and religious interference..

@snytiger6 Are you sure about all that? I would be surprised and disappointed if we don't know all the hormonal changes etc by now. Even if we don't, I don't see why these things can't be studied and quantified with in utero pregnancies.

2

you heard loud and clear

They are making no bones about it...they want to change the law in all states!

@Marionville that would be bad news. but it would be more difficult. alabama is ripe for that legislation. but complacency by opponents is dangerous

This is a very discriminatory prejudice move by white anti feminist men who have no regard the rights of women, their health, and their families health!

These anti feminist whit men would rather let a women bleed to death in butchers hut or give her the death penalty for not being able to afford or care another member of her family!

These men who impregnate women should be jailed and castrated for impregnating these women who seek abortion!

This is just an extreme example of what should be done!

Under a Fascists controlled government every birth is a pawn to be used by the wealthy and their corporations for fodder to be dispose of at will when no longer useful to them!

Yes they should, but that will never happen!
