I know this may be unpopular with some of my trans Atlantic friends but if America’s ideologies since Trump are so bigoted and archaic, why would the rest of the world pay any attention. What exactly does America have that anyone else needs. It sure ain’t global respect or money!

You'd be surprised at how many of us agree with your assessment

They have an obscene amount of nuclear weapons, a warmongering National Security Advisor (Bolton), a presidential Yes man in Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State, whose only achievement after a year in office is not getting sacked like his predecessors, and a completely egocentric nincompoop as POTUS. What they get from the rest of us in the rest of the world is fear that this trio will trigger WW3 out of a combination of braggadocio, ineptitude, and crass stupidity. Playing “chicken” with Iran and China will not end well for any of us, and what we need from the USA is a regime change...and soon!!

It's less about the US having major global influence anymore, and more about how the US will react as it's major global influence continues to erode and yield to the likes of China and India. US voters continue to increasingly hand control of the ship over to people with more brawn than brains, even as the ship sails a beeline course into an abyss.

With people like Trump having their finger on the big red button that is capable of causing global annihilation, it's no wonder the eyes of the rest of the world remain on the US, even as it's influence wanes. A dying sun is capable of incinerating everything around it. So to is the United States.

This is a complicated question. In itself the one thing USA did have, plenty of young healthy people and land, is depleting and less useful in the time of the third military age. I would suggest we need to keep our eyes on aspiring super powers of India and China. Russia is too insular, hence Putin's desire to mess with other country's political base. Trump is an extreme swing to the right in a polarised nation who felt Obama was too much. The USA will elect an honest person next time. I agree though, from having lived in USA and now back in UK. There is no great difference in lifestyle and we have the NHS. Now you guys live in virtual paradise. That does need protecting.

Marshall Plan, anybody? A bit of help during WWII? Or, just forgedabowdit.........

The Marshall plan was payment for turning up late to two world wars in a row.

The US continues to lead the world in new (and back-engineered) technology. Russia used to be good at back-engineering, but it became so corrupt that it's only remaining specialty is espionage, which it has leveraged to take over both the Presidency and the Senate. China is catching up on the back engineering, but still wants the advantages the US as it struggles with merging capitalism and collectivism. Only a few other countries contribute to science and technology, and then, only in specialized fields. The US does remain strong in terms of citizens motivated to commercialize technology, but even US science has been hobbled by GOP know-nothing attitudes.

Maybe the world is paying attention because Trump is a very dangerous anomaly?
