Two young Jehovah's Witnesses came to my door yesterday. They gave me a flyer (the usual propaganda) inviting me to join their church. As always, I demurred. Then one of them asked if there was anything I would like them to pray on. I said, "Yes. Pray that we achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the next ten years." They said they would, and took their leave. I guess I should feel good knowing that God is going to be on the job. So why is it that I am not really filled with confidence? 😎

That must give you a bit of hope.

Why are all Jehovah's witness women flat-chested?
(Visualize pushing motion) " Get off my porch!" "Get off my porch!"

I was considering the JW lifestyle but I just looked down at my chest. I don't qualify at all!

When they come to my door, I tell them that i'm not religious and have no need for it, but in a cordial way. If / when they press the topic, I let them in. We always have a friendly discussion, though they tend to paint a very grim picture of the state of the world. In response, I paint what I view as a more accurate picture, using tools like gapminder.org, the effective altruism movement, etc. I find that data really surprises them, which only makes sense, as it still often surprises me.

Once, after we said our goodbyes, I overheard them talking as they walked down my driveway. One said "Wow, that guy was an atheist?" The other responded, "Yeah, and he wasn't a jerk!" I felt really nice afterwards 🙂

I agree. One can be firm and true to one's own convictions (or the lack thereof) without being rude or unpleasant.

I'd have asked them to pray for intelligence, insight, humility, and compassion for our Orange Embarassment. If he did come to intelligence and insight he's step down and then and only then would I believe god is real.

It is a good question. I would have asked them to pray for whirled peas. 🙂

so some young people felt committed enough in their beliefs to try spreading the word and you used it as time for bullsh!t? why didnt you engage them instead? scared they might convince you of something?? you don't know what path they traveled to get to that point so who are you to ridicule them??? ONE goal, many paths.

If they were knocking on his door trying to proselytize to him, I think he was within his rights to say whatever the hell he felt like saying.

@pasha-one-nine
Well said! Thank you!

@pasha-one-nine well I would expect you to say that pasha because your entire post speaks of ME ME ME. guess what - it's not all about you. in fact, most of it isn't.

So you think anthropomorphic climate change is bullshit? Boy, are you ever in for an awakening. Stay tuned homie!

@Flyingsaucesir assume much?

@JeffMesser
As far as climate change is concerned, I'm not making any assumptions. I'm just following the science. As for the likelihood of God fixing it before civilization collapses and millions of species go extinct, His record on interventions is not good. And would it be? He is merely another human invention. My lack of confidence in God is well-founded.

I love it when religious people come to my door. I get to lecture them on anything I want from environmentalism to politics. It's my home. I do the talking. I only get upset when they send their grade school children to proselytize.
