It has never been any kind of a problem for me.

Must be horrendous.

I live in a part of North Carolina with lots of folks from up north, so there’s more open-mindedness - even if these folks follow Christianity.

The hardest part for me is dating ... when many “matches” hear I don’t believe in god, they’re stunned beyond words. It’s such a foreign concept for them. And then they run for the hills.

Lonely at times. Can be dangerous. And isolating, too. I'm a life long Democrat, a lesbian, atheist and physically disabled. One can never be too careful in picking who to trust here in,Georgia.

I would have left decades ago but my family is here.

I forgot to mention I was Born in Boston, and that's almost a mortal sin to be so different in Georgia.

@Ms_McSteven

You can always come back for brief visits with family. Dealing with that crowd is a lot easier when you know that you’ll be leaving to go back to greener pastures shortly.

Don’t know. I moved out of one of those areas when I left for college and only went back to visit my parents. Now that they’ve both passed, I have zero reason to ever go back.

I'm not sure, does Iowa qualify as Bible Belt? I know the South does, but not sure about the Midwest. Somebody help me on that and I'll weigh in if I qualify.

I think the operative condition is whether you're in an area where everyone references god all the time.

@JeffMesser I looked it up on the web and technically, Iowa is not in the Bible Belt, tho it borders Missouri, which is part of the edge of the Bible Belt. I don't feel qualified then, tho I do feel like an outcast in my area and have felt that way my whole life in Iowa.

@TomMcGiverin we're all going to the same place man. Some people just take different roads to get there. That's why I don't mess with the churchies anymore. They just don't see the bigger picture and they have some blinders on. You hafta pity them a bit.

@JeffMesser I hear ya Jeff.....

sucky. people automatically assume you're a christian and look askew if you tell them you're hindu. tell them you're an atheist and they nearly run away in horror. back in the day I've had old ladies literally take 2 steps back away from me when I told them I was an atheist.

Exactly. But sometimes it can be entertaining watching the facial expressions!
