I have had similar criticism in Africa when told - 'you can not understand, you are not from here and soon you will leave and go back to your home.' The woman was right, I could not understand - what happened was beyond comprehension to someone from a safe english village - but I did what I could to help knowing it could never be enough.
It is all any of us can do
It is easy to be horrified and to condemn racism from a seat above the fray...I realize it must be super scary for people of color or of different religions or ethnicities...Just because people are white and not in a threatened group does not mean that they can't empathize and try to help and call out this behavior.
Why do people continue to put down and throw negative stuff onto people who are trying to help and be on your side? Why not do something positive and tell us what we can do to help instead of pointing out the very thing we have no control over...being white and privileged...? If you keep bashing those who truly care and will do what we can financially, legally, morally, etc., why should we bother?
Have no control over????? You can't do anything about being born white, as I am. But you can do something about how you see and address the world around you. White privilige is not an incurable disease like uterine cancer. Neither is willfull ignorance. It can be cured through becoming informed about how it manifests, how and who it impacts, and how you can change within your sphere of influence, that is if you even want to.
@t1nick That is exactly what I said...I can't help being born as I am so I do what I can and would appreciate learning and doing more with help, not with negativity..
@Sticks48 I think we are all upset over the racist remarks made by our own president (not My President)....we all want to help...and it is easy to see the original post from someone who is certainly afraid and frustrated...it is frustrating to everyone so we have to not eat our own and stick to directing our anger to those who are doing this, not each other...@t1nick is one of the good guys...it was a misunderstanding I am sure...
@thinktwice Sorry, but I felt it was an attack on you and to me you are one of the nicest and definitely most honest people on here.
@Sticks48 well, you know how those youngsters are...often speaking out of turn...
@thinktwice no prob. I was in the wrong. I misread the post. I apologize to thinktwice from this 65 year old youngster. Lol
@t1nick Still younger than me, kiddo! No prob...I have enjoyed your posts and know that you are indeed a good guy...so, behave you whippernapper... ha ha ha
@thinktwice
Will do. I am properly admonished will go to my room and sulk. Lol
@t1nick ha ha good boy! At least I didn't have to spank you...
@altschmerz I agree that to minimize the rage and the pain is wrong...I agree that the fear is real and that these actions threaten all of us of mixed races...what I don't agree with is that without the constant help of white people calling out racism and checking their own privilege, that the fight can't be won...the rant would be better if we illicit the help of those who want to help, not alienate them...I have been on both sides of this debate...I did not mean to discount the feelings of the person who was ranting a truth...
@altschmerz Anybody who has experienced hatred for no other reason than for being in any kind of group has every right to be angry and I don't preach forgiveness for hateful actions...I do think without cooperation from people who are trying to help, people cut off their own noses to spite their face...don't forgive the oppressors, but let in those who reach out to be supportive...
The post was directed to those white people who are not understanding and who constantly say we need to look past it etc. Not at people really willing to help.
@GreatNani yes...I get it...but I also think it further distances them...I have seen people like that who throw up their hands and refuse to even get involved because they feel anger towards them and not the main issue to solve...not saying it even makes sense to me but I want as many people possible to understand they can't look away only because they think it is not affecting them...it most definitely does hurt all of us
@thinktwice living and working in DC with a majority POC I can say they are tired of trying to bring people around to their side. Things are bad and you either see it and want to fight it or you dont. There is no middle ground.
@GreatNani I think that is what it is coming to...just saw Mitch McConnell say trump is not a racist...just wow...seriously, he doesn't connect that his own wife was just attacked and is one of those that trump wants to go back...we are never going back...just wow...I am disgusted
@thinktwice absolutely disgusting. My mother was an immigrant but on my father's side I could be a member of the DAR. So where do I go?
@GreatNani You are like me and so many others...I hate this president for not uniting all of us and appreciating the diversity of our great nation...we all contributed and we all love our country no matter where we started out...I want our values to continue for the future...
