Would you still be friends with a person who ended up becoming a huge Trump supporter? I have a long distance friend from New Jersey. I try to be the bigger person & just listen. I put my thoughts into our political discussions & we both are mature about it. It's just some of the stuff he says is so cringe worthy lol. Maybe he'll change?

Nope, don’t think I could stomach and/or risk it. I’m barely in favor of keeping my family relationships with parents who think this dumb shit. Someone my own age that’s still fooled by him is either ignorant, cruel, creepy or all three. There’s no excuse for being that ill informed this day n age.

People are correct when they say that patience and honest conversation are the only way hearts and minds change but you’ve gotta have a heart and mind before you can change them, and I see no evidence for either in anyone who is still supporting trump at this late date.

If that’s the only dimension to your relationship it will probably grind to a halt. If it gets in the way agree not to discuss politics!

Discussion and exchange of views is the only way tat hearts and minds change

If he changes it may take a lifetime. I had a close friend for over 50 years that believes Trump is next to a godsend. We were at odds over Trump belief for a time and one day he told me the border situation could be solved quickly by shooting people who cross it down like dogs and just let their bodies remain where they fall. He even told me Trump would approve of it. I cussed him out in a very big way and he and I will never be friendly again.

The above is a true story and you might see that my former friend is not the brightest bulb. Look closely and you can also see the supposed background of some of our recent shooters. To distance from crazy shooter ideas the Trump GOP tries to say one of the recent shooters was a Bernie follower and yet another one a Warren follower. OK. Now Trump's GOP wants you to believe that someone supporting Medicare for All is doing mass shootings. Not in this world. It's just more word salad by those who will fight for Trump's right to say anything and incite almost everyone. Trump is not a leader and he does not care about you. He only cares about Donald Trump.

Met a local guy with lots in common in one realm, and none in both politics & religion. Problem was, he just couldn’t let it alone. His fears and devotion to radical fantasy apparently compelled him to constantly confront me. It may have come down to me knowing this shit was all in his head - and him assuming he was palling with the Devil 😉

I let the friendship drop, it wore me out ..and took me to an ugly place, both the fanatical religion and the trump support. No loss, thinks me ~

You will only be able to remain friends at this point if you both agree to leave political discussions alone. You cannot be friends where there is no respect! And just 20 or so years ago politics was Not considered a fit subject of conversation anyway.....

My buddy Jim and I grew up together believing the same things. He moved in next door to me when he was 6 and I was 9. We had always stayed in touch and saw each other fairly often. We both believe in 2nd Amendment rights, a woman's right to choose, socially liberal and fiscally conservative... Etc. I think we both have voted for Republicans and Democrats alike. I will say that I always vote for the person... Not the party. I don't hold my self interest above that of my country as I know others do... And he now does.

Jim fell victim to the fake Facebook ads and shocked me with his belief in the Clinton Pizza Pedophilia crap. He became a huge Trump supporter. I was dumbfounded! This severely cut back on our communication over the past few years. The last time I talked to him was about 4-5 months ago. I also found out now that he is a huge conspiracy theorist and now believes 9/11 was a hoax and that we never landed on the moon.

It's like something came and ate his brain! I can no longer bear even talking to him. If he can't trust NASA... He sure as shit can't trust me!

I have a couple, but they try my patience. Fortunately, I don’t see them all that often. A little of them in my life goes a long way.

No. It's not an issue of politics anymore. It's an issue of what is right & what is wrong. Morally & ethically. Anyone who relishes the pain & suffering that is being caused policy, who gets actual pleasure from the pain of small children sobbing on tv because their parents have been snatch. People who claim it should be a non-issue that an american born citizen was held for weeks in detention because their last name was of Hispanic origin. Who doesn't care that 6 kids died in detention because "they should have stayed home" instead of following OUR written laws that state asylum seekers must present at a legal port of entry to request asylum. who justifies rule by temporary appointments because you can't even get your appointees past your own party, who sees & hears what is being said, the lies, the hatefulness, & has no issue with it & feels free to use all the racial epithets in front of you that they would not have done so 3 years ago because, "no biggy, you're my friend" & it's just a "political" difference of opinion. People who feels the ends justified the means, regardless of what they are...yeah, label me immature if you want to but I can't be friends with someone like that. I still have my integrity & I can't look at my racially diverse grandkids & know I affiliate with someone who thinks they are less than but, "well, they aren't ALL xxxxxxx...they will probably be one of the good ones". Yeah, fuck that guy.

If someone does not respect my core values or my intelligence, i don’t want them to pretend to be my friend. And of course if i don’t, I won’t.

I’m a big Trump supporter myself but I have friends who are democrats. But nobody is going to convince me not to support Trump especially one of those left wing democrat nuts.

@Allamanda There’s a lot of left wing sheep!

3

Don't count on it unfortunately. True Trump supporters have filters on so high that they can rationalize any unethical or immoral act and not think twice.

Just like a lot of the liberals.

@Trajan61

Still the old fall back Trajan, "Same to you but more of it routines.". So unimaginative. Hahahahaha

@vjohnson51

It's true that every group has is extreme radical element. But this argumrnt represents an old pattern with guy. You make any observation regarding what the conservatives are doing, and the same to you but more of it, is his usual trope.

1

If an individual would end a friendship due to what you describe then they are unfortunately not a true friend.

On the other hand, discovering that someone you used to think is a decent/kind/empathetic friend turns out to be a Trump supporter, you've now learned something new and potentially unacceptable about that friend.

@vjohnson51 good thinking

@vjohnson51, @Veteran229 Absolutely correct

One of my oldest best friends has gone all the way down the Trump/Alex Jones/Rush Limbaugh rathole. Now that trump's policies are actually hurting people I know, I find I really have no interest in remaining friends with him. Differences of opinion are one thing, people getting hurt is another. 😟

I have not had any good friends that turned out to be Trump supporters but I had some acquaintances who I tried to continue a relationship. I eventually made the decision that I did not want to associate with those who condone a misogynist, .con man and all around idiot. I haven't spoken to them for about 1.5 years.
