Being single again I want to offer some advice. If you want to keep busy and meet single new people don't waste your money on dating sites. Join Meetup.com. Everywhere in the country there are groups for every interest for every age group. Meet real people-not phony profiles. I did and I'm making new friends and enjoying it. Any specifics feel free to PM me.

Omaha has several meet up groups that I belong two, one I am quite active with. The group I am most active with is Omaha Metropolitan Area Humanists Association. We have a weekly book club, a monthly social meeting, and a almost monthly educational type of meeting. Great people, great times. We also have REASON which is Rationalists, Empiricists And Skeptics Of Nebraska. I don't make as many meetings because they're not good times/locations for me. Omaha also has a Baby Boomers group, I've attended some functions with them, not as enjoyable for me, but still good to hang out with folks about my age.

I've done some of that, but never met anyone who's interested in anything beyond the topic of the group. (ie. dating)

Same for me, made two friends out of Meetup groups, but no one to date, that was a dead end. One reason is that the Meetup groups in my area still attracted the same kind of mainstream culture and lifestyle people as the paid dating sites, therefore not compatible for me to date. Also, found that almost all the people in Meetup groups for my area were Christians.

@TomMcGiverin in my area there's a meetup group for atheists. I just joined. I'll let you know what happens.

@BitFlipper Based on what I've learned about the group in my area, I wouldn't expect much in the way of dating prospects. Probably all the group will offer are interesting discussions and the opportunity to make a friend or two.

I have noticed a definite shortage of men in the meet up groups, at least around here, so men who do venture out might be at an advantage. That said, I don't really like the "singles" meet ups so much, but there are all kinds.

Lots of bible study near me... And small bar owners trying to get business...

"Being single again"... <---- so meetup is a good way to find people for short term relarionships?

If that is your goal. There are all kinds of groups - Lesbian groups, groups by age ranges.

Meetup disbanded several years ago because of lack of participation.

They did sedentary, boring activities:

  1. Watching baseball games (yawn).
  2. Beer and pizza (neither of which I like).
  3. Playing Bunco (whatever that is).

Too bad -I joined a Freethinker Group, Red and Blue Reunite Group, 2 Trivia Groups, Movie Group, Gaming Group (Board), and Singles Social groups that go out to dinner and have cocktails. Many hiking, kyaking, physical activity groups too. Keep checking-new groups all the time.

I guess it depends on your geographic area, but there a lot of meetups in ours, particularly niche groups. We found some anime groups and my cousin, after resisting for a while, checked it out and found a gay& lesbian sci-fi book club that she loves. I wish I had more time to check them out.

I was on it for a while, but the paucity of people in my area and a second shift schedule, soon there was no point reading the notifications anymore. All the interesting meetings were on nights I worked or 45 to 90 minutes away.
I imagine, if I lived in a metropolitan area or had a normal job, I'd get more use out of this site.

New groups all the time-keep checking. Day groups too.
