David Silverman, former President of American Atheists, tells his side of the story with the details of a pulp fiction. The interviewer appears to out the wife of American Atheists' board-member Matt Dillahunty as the claimant "R". Please don't shoot the messenger, I'm just a little monkey after all.

Funny to see O'Reilly try the tiresome tides argument again. Wonder when he tried this with Silverman, compared to when he tried with deGrasse Tyson. Tyson laughed at him, explained the tides' relationship to the moon, then threw God of the Gaps at him.

I wondered the same thing. I think they teach that in grammar school science. David Silverman really is an intelligent person. Just got caught off guard I guess.

The other question is why didn't O'Reilly know such an easily known question?

Yes, sex scandals are not just things that happen to the religious. At least I know more now, but I always thought a good safe word would be "stop."

@OldMetalHead In BDSM world safe words are supposed to be something so incongruous that there can be no doubt why someone would say it... eg youre doing your thing with your partner, hot and heavy, and s/he says "mollusk", it means something is wrong, stop immediately. There is no gray area. Also using the words "green/yellow/red" to describe comfort level, is pretty common, especially when people are just getting to know each other, exploring limits. At a higher level, some people like that "consensual non consent" thing where they pretend to have zero control, but those sorts of relationships take months or years to build. They take a great deal of insight and responsibility, and are never stuff you just do for fun at a party with a new partner.

It was a clear blunder if the supposed "misunderstood man" thought that type of behavior was appropriate with someone he was "having fun with at a party" with, and an even bigger condemnation, from a BDSM perspective, that he would take his position as someone with strength and control over another human, and use it to hurt them. He wasnt prepared for the responsibility he would have need to have for that type of play, instead he abused another person in order to get his rocks off, and called it BDSM. Another community he'll be excluded from.

@OldMetalHead I don't get any of this and would never do it. I'm also not into sex games. As a kid doctor and nurse was an excuse to experiment, but I grew up. I like David Silverman and agree with his views on atheism. As for sex, he pretty much sealed it all when he told her "she could not say no to him." Some call that rape. In this case the double standard of "MeToo" nailed him and did him in.

After hearing/reading some of the clueless attempts at justification Ive seen from various men who were outed by the #metoo movement, Its just embarrassing. And even if the woman had no right, beyond chattel, to her own sexual life, it doesnt take a brain trust to know that you don't fuck around with your co workers, much less their spouses. The ignorance is amazingly disappointing,

Ignorance and entitlement go hand in hand.

Admin gave rehabbing Silvermans reputation a go here a couple months ago - didnt go to well and the entire post was removed. The only remnant of that effort is the David Silverman Discussion group, which doesn't seem to get much action. Should pop a copy of those to it.

ive heard better attempts at weaseling out of responsibility for idiocy, from my 4 year old niece. that thread was embarrassing.

@MarkiusMahamius so humble, too, likening it to the attention a rock star gets. Just flat embarrassing

I met David about 2015 when he was on top. I believe he is dedicated to the Atheist movement. His interview seems honest but he seemed to be unaware of what's acceptable in the general society and especially with someone who represents Atheists and the leader of American Atheists organization. Regardless of what happens in court I doubt he will ever hold a leadership position in an Atheist organization again.

Apparently this kind of behavior is normal at atheist conventions.

@celticagent Why do you say this?

@celticagent

That settles it. I am going to the next atheist convention.
