Feeling a bit lost in many ways. I have just returned to the US (Oregon, to be specific) at the beginning of March, after living abroad for over 13 years. What a culture shock, let me tell you! I was last here to visit in December of 2014, and things have changed ever so much.

Aside from driving on the right side of the road here, so much feels so very different! I feel like a fish out of water: somewhat apprehensive, quite alone, and definitely unsure.

But, as is said, this too shall pass, right?

If you saw a black Corvette between 1991 and 2013, often on the Kettering Road, that was me. Driving an American car in the UK is interesting. The Brits are so polite, realizing you can not see the inside lanes they allways flash you when you are clear to change lanes.

AutoHome, like the AAA in the USA, is my mates business. We had a couple other things going, like building boats and motorsports that keep me coming up to the UK. My home is in the South of Spain, little town named El Puerto de Santa Maria.

Why did this top post? It was a reply, makes little sense here.

Sadly, I only made it to Spain once. Flew into Malaga, and drove north up into the mountains, so I could use my Soanish. I had a BLAST, as almost no one spoke English!

I rarely headed down towards Kettering, Corby, Wicksteed Park, etc. (Not sure where Kettering Rd is.) Only very occasionally took the A14.

Welcome, YamaBlonde!
I'm actually still in Thailand, where I've been teaching since 2010, but I plan to return to the US as soon as I can, which will put me in a similar situation.

I was born and grew up in Haiti, with American parents, so had culture shock each time we went to the US every five years.

I actually moved to Thailand because I feel more at home abroad, plus this place is a tropical paradise. I live six minutes from the beach, by motorbike.

Sounds beautiful!

Give it time. You’ve found a good online place to make friends, however.

Thank you. 🙂

Funny, I had a similar experience, the culture shock isn't so much going to a new place, but coming back after you've been gone. I moved to the east coast, the culture shock was when I moved back to the West coast

I was actually born and raised back east, moving west when I was 21. So very different. ... still.

Welcome home, why return to Trumpmerica?

My reason for staying in England took a massive dive downward, and I felt the need for emotional support; my family is back here.

Well I hope moving back allows you to center yourself and be happy. 🙂

@Medicdad Thanks! X. It's already better!!

Honestly, I think life is richer, freer, more fullfilling, easier, happier, healthier, so many things more than the US will ever offer or be able to offer than living abroad. I'm determined never to return. There are few things I miss but am also happy to do without. Good luck with your reaclimation to the US.

It does not get any better. After living outside of the USA for over 25 years, only steping on US soil one time to change planes during that time, I moved back in 09.

9 years back and everyday I ask myself, why?

Family health problems are the only reason I am here. If they recover or die, I am out the door, never to return.

At least you are in Oregon, a rather godless place, we are in the buckle of the bible belt, better know as Mistake-sippy but we travel constantly. Spend a lot of time in Montana and SoCal.

There is not one place in the USA that can offer us the same quality of life as any village in Europe.

BTW, The UK is the only place in the European theater that drives on the other side of the road. Every time I go to our place in Northamptonshire I have to stop in Dover and change the motorcycle's handlebars over to the other side.

I was 45 min north of Northants and 30 min south of Leicester, though still in Leicestershire.

It is beautiful here, though I am west of the Cascade Mountains and not familiar with the eastern areas.

Of course. humans, crows and rats have populated the planet because they are so adaptable. if you can go live in the north pole like some scientists do then you will be just fine.

I would consider that if I had money. 🙂

Welcome back-Where were you? I'm thinking real hard about moving overseas. I cannot stand the way things are happening in America. I've thinking been thinking Ecuador. I'd go teach English as a Second Lauguage.

That sounds like fun!! I should think about that... I speak decent Spanish. LOL
I was in central England.

Hell I've been living here the whole time and I'm in culture shock in this country

I can really imagine that!

Sounds like you were in GB or Italy, or? (left side driving) I was born in Germany and lived there off and on as a military dependent, and again on active duty during my own hitch in the AF, but I lived in the American microcosm of being on-base, so the cultural immersion wasn't anwhere near living on the German economy. I can imagine how different it would feel if I had though. At least you speak the lingo. =]

They drive on the right in Italy. It's mostly our ( ahem ) colonies that still drive on the left as nature intended .

@MarcIveson LOL! Ah, I stand corrected. It's France that also drives on the left (wrong) as opposed to the right (correct) side of the road. (and I am totally kidding here with the right/wrong!) =]

@IAMGROOT No problem at all ... Actually , I think the French drive wherever they like !!!

I lived in central England, and have driven on the continent. The only place in Europe that drives on the left is the UK. France, Italy, Spain, Germany, etc are all like the US: left-hand drive cars, driven on the right. It was very interesting driving an English-made car on the right side of the road, let me tell ya!!

Know exactly what you're going through. Was in central India '83-'84 and came to Maine in the winter. Felt like the ground and air was rejecting me. Got better but that time in India is with me to this day.

I totally understand. It becomes a part of who we are.

1

Is it the political and social atmosphere that has you stymied?

Not really. Although I kept a close eye on all news, and realise it is biased and exaggerated, I had still been in touch with family and friends across America. I think my way of thinking has changed, in general, and the prices were a MAJOR shock!!! Things had been so much less expensive when I was last here. Granted, that was over 3 yrs ago.

3

Is it that Oregon has changed, or that you have changed due to your time abroad -- or both?
Years ago, after several years in West Berlin and the German culture, I saw north Florida (my home region) very differently.

Both, no doubt. The prices have risen so much since I was last here!! I had thought it was less expensive here - but no longer. Sheesh!
