Poll: Can we not have questions directed at one group or another without the other non-requested opinions getting upset?

This came up recently and it was complained that because the post requested to only hear from one gender and not everyone that the post was sexist. I disagree. I've seen post here asking for opinions from men not women, from women not men, from agnostics not atheist... and so on.

I don't have a problem with this. I might post my opinions because it is an open forum after all but I don't get all namey-cally just because they made a requesting post that did not include me.

What say the all?

There will always be people who make every issue all about themselves. I appreciate these people, because they are volunteering a whole lot of personal red flags, free of charge. I know what post prompted this poll, but I have no idea why the post disappeared. One would need to ask the person who post it originally, I suppose. Anything on the internet is about as substantial as cotton candy in a toilet bowl anyway, so there's no point in getting too worked up over it.

Great analogy! I’m going to have to remember that one. 🙂

Nah not anything on the internet... there is awesome peer reviewed, scientific journal articles available online... waaaay more important than cotton candy toilet bowl imo 😉

@demifeministgal and then there's breitbart.com and that ilk. Enough people can't differentiate between that and the "awesome peer reviewed, scientific journal articles" that it reduces all of it to fucksoup most of the time.

@Deb57 Well that is like saying libraries are garbage because they have fictional books and frivolous magazine articles/newspapers based on falsehoods/half truths and therefore libraries are a fucksoup. It is not the medium which is crap, it is humans using it that are crap. The tool is as awesome as any other tool in history, even more so than things like the tv or radio, and its usefulness and awesomeness is not reduced by morons using the tool incorrectly. That's my opinion

@demifeministgal the libraries I have frequented, and there have been a great many, tend to be a great deal more selective in the fare they offer. They also have this cool thing they do in libraries where they go to some effort to separate fact from fiction. I wouldn't compare most libraries to the fucksoup that is the internet.

@Deb57 There is a bit of that separation on google as well... try typing in google scholar and search for materials there... it is like the online science library 🙂

How can this be a big deal? If this is something you're passionate about, you might benefit by finding another hobby.

I'll respond to posts that I want to respond to, even if I am in the excluded category. We're all adults here - right?

No.

7

Wow, that all turned into a small fire storm. So, here is my two cents: I saw, I noted, and I ignored the post. Maybe there is a better place to post it? IDK. There is a men's group, so why not a women's? Anyway, now that I've read the many reactions, I have a couple of thoughts: 1) much ado about nothing with people getting upset over an open forum 2) whether one likes it or not, some people have different feelings and beliefs on gender - get over it.

7

What scientific research projects are going on here? Are we just taking this polling a bit too seriously?

But it's a POLL. I haz opinionz. Me IMPORTANT!

7

I respond to anything I feel like responding to.

First day on the internet ?

5

If you post in a public forum... You will get a public response.

@MichaelSpinler Not sure how that thread went sideways... I almost commented in it but didn't... Now it has vanished like a fart in the wind!

5

I think everyone should respond if they feel inclined to. If others only want to hear from a select group they can just read the responses from those whom they’ve chosen. I wouldn’t be upset by the request for only responses from a select group. After all there are too many real problems to deal with. But, I also would respond if I had something to add to the conversation. If the poster gets upset that I’m not a member of the “right” group. So be it.

This cannot be a big deal. We are better than this pettiness.

4

IMO..you can comment on any post you like.

4

I’m guilty of commenting on posts not aimed at me, e.g. about cults, vegan food or atheists. I do try and stay relevant to the post though and not insult the people it’s aimed at on purpose to get a rise. But it takes all sorts I suppose.

Moderating the internetz??1!?

Why, that's like herding cats! Sisyphean, even.

This ol' gato remembers the telnet/BB days on a 9600kps, whatchu call it again... modem - flamewars galore.

Then the internet came to your house, on a little disk, for only $1.99 an hour (local phone charges still apply), but the first 10 hours were FREE! and used up in the first 10 hours. And configuring DSL, what a nightmare.

Now, there are internets everywhere, even in my pocket! And the one thing I learned, so many years in...

Ultimately, it's just words in a little white box; really, why get so worked up and take it so deadly seriously?

kthxbai!

Once a question is posed on the forum, then it is open to the forum. Just try to stay focused.

3

Great question for a poll...

3

I would say in depends on the question being asked as to whether or not I would be a little perturbed. If it is a question I feel anyone can answer I might say to myself what's that about. However, I would still answer. I have seen some questions, however, which I could never answer because of my gender. ,

3

I don't see a problem with asking a question from a specific group of people. For the most part I keep out of it if I am not or at least announce my what I am and be respectful.

I think its a jerk move for atheists to jump in and start the whole atheist/agnostic debate if a person is asking an unrelated question of agnostics specifically.

One does have to remember while posting these that others will see it, and remain respectful of the other non included groups.

I personally have better things to do than get my undies in a bunch over somebody else's opinion. This world has actual problems that need dealt with.

3

Sometimes I answer poll questions if it seems to me that I have something to contribute, even if I'm not in the specified group that was being asked. It ought to be pretty clear from my photo what group I do belong to, in some cases, but I try to make it clear in others. If I think it's a case where I would get upset over the question, I often just stay above the fray.

I saw the poll in question. I didn't respond because I'm not here for dating,
but I didn't see anything wrong with the member's questions.
It related to female reactions.
I don't understand what the big hairy deal was.

@NoPlanetB Some folks are overly-sensitive. The other day, I cautioned another member to be careful about festival food. So did someone else.
We were both accused of being pejorative and xenophobic. It was fairly
freakin' ridiculous.

@NoPlanetB You are exactly correct.

damn what poll is this?? Now I am so damn curious 😟

@demifeministgal me too!

@OldMetalHead can you tag me in said poll?

@OldMetalHead thanks! I saw that thread but did not read the butthurt people... I shall go back and read the latest comments 😉

The way you posed your question (about the pictures men post) led me to believe you preferred replies from women, but men's were okay too. I misunderstood. Sorry.

That’s exactly right, you didn’t misunderstand. Most people posting for a certain group are probably the same. But I wasn’t trying to insult men by discussing which pictures women would respond to, merely find out if they felt similarly to myself. It turns out they did feel similarly. But some negative comments about women only looking for wealthy partners, the dating scene being a game playing arena, or handsome men posting that they’re ugly and fishing for complements, frustrated me as I found them annoying and not relevant to the original post. I probably should have just let it go in retrospect: live and learn. Just like this one isn’t Really relevant to the original post now 😉

@girlwithsmiles I've never seen men's posts, but I've heard there's lots of fancy boats, cars, houses, and I'm sure they're very effective.
But slobby one? To attract slobby women? I've no idea.
All I know is very rarely got a response. Even if wrote them, usually nothing.
But it"s true I was only writing the attractive ones to whom everybody else (including the guys with Corvettes and yachts) were writing, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.
I get much more of a response here, I think because it is more a market of ideas, not meat.
But that's only a guess. I'm no longer seriously in the market anyway Tired of looking.

Mmm the replies on my the picture post indicated that some people found expensive boy toys were a turn off. No one suggested they are more likely to be interested in someone with those up. It seems most women were just after an open honest smile like myself 😉 but plenty, like you, are enjoying their own company instead of looking.

@girlwithsmiles I'm making myself "enjoy' it, yes.

2

I don't see a problem here as long as everyone is allowed to respond, because then opportunity would be equal.

Even in cases where there are multiple categories where you are either part of it or not, such as gender or race equality is still technically guaranteed because each group could have a group which is invite only. On the surface this might seem discriminatory, but it's not because everyone belongs to one group or another.

2

I didn't see an issue. I commented in that post but didn't vote.

2

It's no big deal.

2

Well, there is really more than an "either or" in genders.

This is another reason the preference is dubious.

Is there a way to split a poll into Female - Male - Unicorn

2

It’s always possible to ignore the post as there is no compulsion to respond.

Besides, someone can always respond “as a man” “as a Buddhist” “as a lop-eared rabbit”

It allows for input while declaring a position outside of the requested sample set. The response can also be ignored by the poster.
