OK so we all get bored to death with the meaning of 'spiritual' question. But a lot of people here list themselves as 'Free-thinker'. What the #### does free-thinker mean ?

I'm not sure such a thing as "free-thinking" actually exists. We are all influenced by the ideas that came before us, by reaction to others around us, and experiences in our lives.

That's my thoughts. Either you think or you don't, and if you do it must be free thinking, because anything else is not thinking.

@Fernapple

I don't know if their is such a thing as "not thinking".
There's fallacious thinking, specious thinking, but these do not qualify as not thinking.

"I think, therefore I am" (Emmanual Kant, I think said that). Thinking in itself is not free thought, it still remains influenced by context and experiences.

@Allamanda

I concur with that, but doesn't mean that more deliberate thought is free thought. I understand the point individuals are trying to make. But it's like popular trends, at some point the rebellion becomes the crowd and it's no longer rebellion, its following the crowd (even if the crowd is limited on size and a minority).

Take the punk rock trend. At first it was embraced by only a few who wanted to rebel against mainstream society and morals. But even they were not free thinkers, as those feelings, thoughts. and sentiments had existed for generations and millenia. I'll give credit to them for acting on these ideas, whereas others just thought or complained about it. But once it became a "trend" it no longer was free thought. It was copy catting, emulating to be more exact.

@Allamanda

Kinda sorta, almost, but not quite, well, .........maybe.........Lol.
Although Science does provide us new information given improvements in techonology and the ability to collect more precise and discrete information

For me, it refers to someone who forms their own opinions rather than being persuaded into believing what is generally accepted without question, i.e. religion and politics.

That is what we would hope it means, but why put it on your bio ?

@Fernapple Beats the hell outa me 🙂

@Fernapple I put it in my bio, because I'm proud of who I am and would not like to be seen wrongly.

2

Freethinker = you like to speak your mind, and you hate it when people try to dictate to you how to think and feel. It's ok if you COULD be wrong, and people don't agree with you, or vice versa, but no dictation. That's how I see it anyways

I have encountered many religious people who's minds are mired in a faith (belief without evidence often defended against counter claims supported by evidence) based interpretation of reality. Those faithful I have encountered are not free to question their faith based beliefs. They are therefore not free thinkers.

I have de-converted a few theists and as a part of their process of thanking me, they have expressed a great "freedom" as now they can see the world and accept (not fear) things their church had condemned them from questioning or accepting.

Naed it ☺️

2

For me means the right I have to reject what does not make sense in my life. As an example are religions, fashion industry rules or anything that takes away my own natural identity.

2

Free from dogma and indoctrination. I have tried to live like this for many years and i guess i kind of am a Freethinker. BUT being very honest, i observe myself sometimes speaking or behaving with some sort of indoctrination....

When this happens i observe it and try to see what is mine and what is indoctrination, and i move on calmly in life.

2

A Freethinker is one who ignores norms established by tradition & authority & thinks independently.

On another level, it is one who maintains an open minded scientific attitude . One who is skeptical of all received knowledge & demands evidence before belief.

On another level, it is one who has the imagination to creatively see the novel & express it.

Freethinkers may learn from other Freethinkers, but eventually must move on. It is a lonely business. Anyone who can accept true loneliness is a beast or a god.

So it's another word for smug arsehole?

Nice threads, I wondered too, it seems to vary a little bit from person to person who see self as freethinker. I feel free to think for myself, but I don’t want more labels. It might be more PC to say “Freethinker” to theologists or persons in places of power when discussing religious or political beliefs. (It says “undefined” to me). Maybe many years ago it was safer to call oneself a freethinker than to label oneself atheist-agnostic, or anything other that the mainstream beliefs of the era. I Imagine a Beatnick in 1950s or 60’s being bored by religious pursuits, or fearing retaliation for not being a christian, etc.

My thoughts too. but I had not thought about the historical origins. Thank for that.

Great questions! Love it

Knows a good dealer !!!

2

I see it as just another unnecessary label.

I mean, "free-thinker", as opposed to what, "locked-up thinker"????
I think it's silly.

A locked thinker is one who has to aline his thoughts with his indoctrination. Free thinkers are allowed logic. An indoctrinated thinker must forgo logic and accept something on faith.

@SAMae I am unclear as to why you felt the need to tell me that?
I'm absolutely aware of what the meaning of free-thinker is, and is not.

@KKGator Likely, I had not finished my coffee, yet trying to function during distracted multitasking. Intended it to be in the general threadline.

Perhaps, and this is a sideways view, which hopefully this forum still embraces without getting ‘offended’ -
No one is a freethinker. If you take a position you are against something which doesn’t sound free. It is locked into a polarity and so will always be restricted by duality.

To be a freethinker you have to put all preconceptions, expectations, discriminations whether religious, political, racial aside and embrace possibility instead of limitation.

Can anyone do that?

That is a good thought. Mine of course was. How can you think and not think freely ? There being only acceptance of the given or thought to choose from, therefore the free part is redundant. Since by thinking you are always freeing yourself from acceptance. But you are saying thought can never be free which is coming at it from the other direction., but still leaves the duality.

Some people try.

@Fernapple Studies have shown, some cited on this site, that people by their nature cherry pick information supporting what they already believe. Studies have even shown that memory can be biased in this way too, perhaps you knew this too, but it’s a bit of a downer when you like to think that you’re open minded about new information.

2

It is to be open-minded to new evidence and willing to entertain ideas that clash with established dogma.

2

I have no fucking idea.

2

I agree with your comparison. I take free thinker to be associated with someone who doesn't want to be labeled with any particular secular dogma, similar to the "spiritual". Maybe it's redundant, or antiquated, but could help get the point across to non believers. However, I've mostly heard people use it in condescending tones in conversation, similar to Christian do when they espouse their beliefs are accurate because of faith. ie. "Well, I'm just a free thinker and that's what I believe". And I've also heard variations of "You have to be intelligent, to see the facts, that's why I'm a free thinker." Both kinda pompous windbags 😂

Not true. I am a lifelong freethinker..was born into a family of freethinkers. We have never at any time thought or spoken like the depiction you gave. I was brought up to believe than everyone deserves respect regardless of their belief or creed. and was never encouraged to believe that we were more intelligent or better than others.

@Marionville I'm glad your family also shows courtesy and respect. But just like I've met good and bad people in life, a couple of the worst ones were "free thinkers". That could easily be isolated and not representative of the lot, it's just been my limited experience.

@Marionville your posts show that you keep that grey matter busy, plus you're quite well mannered 😉 a great example of a free thinker! 😀

@ownworstenemy I didn’t realise this post was made under the Silly, Random and Fun heading...my response would’ve been more lighthearted and less defensive if I had! 😁

Not told what to think by parents, teachers, society, fox news etc.

1

I don't use that term... It comes across as "non-thinker" or "emotional based thinking." I'm not into that. In fact, I find that most of these labels do great injustice to who we are. The challenge I see over and over again is that "free thinkers" all tend to think alike... which suggests that this is not free thinking.

That is my thought, and why I posted this for a little fun, though I have had some good serious replies.

1

There is no cost to thinking free.

1

Self explanatory to me. It's the ability to live life with thought processes unrestrained.

1

My thoughts are... Fact based thought instead of religious doctrine based thought.

1

Being willing to reject the claims of "Divinely revealed knowledge" as not credible is a big part of freethought to my mind.

An Internet search is your friend: [google.com]

But nowhere as fun as a dialogue and some conversation in order to hear what people are thinking about a word or subject!

In theory is the same/close to definition of a scientific mind.
But can be used by someone that simply wants to reject something even if it is scientific/historic/other methodic ways of seeing the truth consensus saying that he/she (is there another way to refer to both genders in English?) don't like.

Gender neutral choices: I say 'folks' when I'm casual and 'humans' when I'm serious and 'earthlings' when I'm feeling extra nerdy. We are slowly catching on to using 'them' and 'their' but it still sounds kind of awkward and will take time I think to refer to a single individual person.

@Bobsuruncle because sometimes you are talking about a person in general independent of the gender, not need to lecture me about your opinion on gender issues.
For example if I want to talk about the person who will read this answer and the lack of text interpretation that "he or she" will demonstrate.
Plus if you don't speak any foreign language, English is one of the few that do not have grammatical gender.
For example, in English you can tell your lover that you was just spending time with a friend. And you do not give information if your lover is a man or a woman or if your friend is a man or a woman, this do not happen in most of languages. So congrats unless you are talking in the third person, your language is already gender neutral, that is why I asked about a gender neutral option in the third person as most of people here are native in English and I am not.

I'll go with a non-conformist view of things. It isn't logic, and some logic can be flawed.

God is love
Love is blind
Stevie Wonder is blind
Therefore Stevie Wonder is god

Reminds my of the agnostic dislexic insomniac; who stayed up at nights wondering if there was a dog 😉

@girlwithsmiles Is there a dog? Might be a dog. Is dog a god? Might be a god. Might be a

No, I can't do this one because I really do like dogs.

All roads lead to a non sequitur joke..

After love, health and freedom is in order of a means to an end , in my life priorities.

As an artist, I always set a free liences in works of sand, snow sculpture, film, stage, tiny houses and costumes. Sometimes I am just a tool for the rich like projects for Walt Disney and some museum work. Sadly it for the money,🙁. But not anymore in today's art works!.❤️💫 FREEDOM IS AWESOME.
