@OwlInASack You won’t see many people complaining about the Curry Houses in Bradford. I went to what I think is the oldest in Bradford, the Karachi in Neal Street, in the 90s. Packed out on a Tuesday and the same most nights I gather.

Immigrant food has mainstreamed into British culture, so I see no argument to not embrace our fellow travellers.

I watch, listened to the link and heard things others probably missed. As soon as he made certain comments people immediately turned off. I did not know of him so listened. I believe, during this time most immigration to Britain were from it's colonies especially in Africa and India and were dark skinned. My late partner was from Iran and also dark skinned. I saw this issue more about immigration than race (of which there is no such thing). A big part of Brexit and the move of some country's including the US has excessive immigration at it's core. We need to stop placing people as the issue and start looking at policies that affect all people, immigrants and citizens alike. My late partner understood this clearly and was the most reason based person many of us have ever known. People are not more important than dirt. It is the system that sustains us (natural, economic, political) that we really need to maintain.

I refuse to follow a certain tribe especially when that tribe uses finger pointing and name calling as a first response.

@Geoffrey51 This is an international phenomena. I visited England many times before Indian food was so popular. Britain was noted for it's tasteless food and is one reason why Indian fare became so popular. However this is a hidden problem. In the amazing film series "Wartime Farms' it is shown Britain was very dependent on imported foodstuffs and the Germans tried to starve them into submission with the U-boots sinking of ships. England put food self-sufficiency on the forefront and increased local farms which saved the day. Recently, our PBS put out a video that showed how our increasing love of international dishes has actually made the US a net importer of foods. We are quickly of even have already lost food self-sufficiency.

I am English and grew up in the south of England. The food was fresh, home grown and had real taste. I don’t know where you got he idea of ‘tasteless’ food. The places at which you ate when you visited were not serving you typical English fare.

The Indian food was due to the impact of immigration and the different cultures bringing their culture with them. This created variety.

@Geoffrey51 So my mind must be playing tricks? My first visit was to a rural part of Birmington. I once stayed at the Union Jack club in London. Later visited Newcastle several times. Typical roast beef and boiled vegetables. Every place I went everything was fried even the toast. This was in the early 70's. A decade later lots of Indian restaurants. Even Germany didn't get any Indian places until the early 80's and when Thai came in that was a real hit. I lived there 15 years and traveled to England many times. A close friend was from Leicester. I still remember him taking me to a famous pub called the Sirloin where the king got drunk and knighted a cut of beef, hence the name. We obviously had different experiences.

@JackPedigo certainly did. The commercial food probably left a lot to be desired in many places The first Indian restaurants were in the 60’s which broadened the palate I suspect.

Home food was brilliant. It was only in the 70s when supermarkets became popular that the quality of food deteriorated

@Geoffrey51 I even remember that during the gas embargo when we went to visit the shops we had to carry flashlights as the shops turned off their lights. This was a fun time and Twiggy was a star.

@OwlInASack Of course one side always pushes their side of an issue. It was the conservative side that criticized the senators move (she is a democrat) and, of course, people listened because it was coming from their tribe. We do the same thing. However, things are never B & W and is a lot more complex then we want to see.
With my background and concerns I saw some things in the video others either missed or simply didn't want to hear. Immigration and immigrants are two separate things in my book. One is a policy and one is about individuals. It is the policy that everyone, immigrants and citizens, have to live and when that policy breaks down everybody suffers.

The cost of that premise to to simply continue vilifying the other side and any information from them relevant or not, is automatically wrong and bad. The result of that direction is what we have always had in the past and are destined for in the future, war and death.

After WWII the US instituted the Marshall Plan. We avoided further war by helping and understanding our enemy. Our Allies were mad at us (and still are to some degree). The punishment of the enemy was tried in WWI and look where it got us. An even bigger war and lots of smaller wars (Korea, Viet Nam, the Israeli situation to name a couple). What' the definition of crazy - doing the same old thing over and over yet expecting a different outcome!!!

@OwlInASack Bottom line is far more has been accomplished with thoughtful dialogue and trying to understand the other side than outright hate. We are playing into tRumps hands by the constant vilification of others and claiming our superiority. More polarization and division (remember the adage "divide and conquer" )?
