This is the result of having a much vaunted, highly organised, super efficient and centralised, distribution system.
Lose just one component and you lose everything. It might make profits for corporations, but it lays the nation wide open to disruption when things go awry.
Sometimes, lean and mean is not good in the long term.

That sucks for the farmers

Their costs and the work involved don’t change whether they get paid or not.
