Why is this app called “Agnostic”?
“Gnostic” means knowledge so “agnostic” means without knowledge. In that case, everybody is an agnostic because nobody knows if there is a god..

Agnostic means you are unsure of the existence of God. The definition is perfect. Among those who are members of this site are agnostics and atheists. Atheists are certain that there is no God.

I keep trying to explain that to people. A(not or no) Gnosis (knowing) = I have not knowledge or I don't know
A (not or no) theos (God) = There is No God.

For some reason I keep running into people who think those are the other way around.

@echosam NO. Theism is the belief that there is a god, or gods. Atheism (The "a" meaning "without" ) is without belief, or lacking belief, that there is a god, or gods-- it is NOT a claim about knowledge.

I am agnostic about many things. In fact the more I learn the more agnostic I become.

Yup no god

Correct. We have no evidence of a god.

All scientists should be agnostic because why should they start out to know something if they already know it. But they are NOT all agnostic. The purpose of science is always to hunt an unknown. As soon as you think you know something you stop searching and become a non scientist again. This is Human logic? Really agnostic means "lack of proof" and it is why you should always look for evidence it does help one to know.

If you think everybody is Agnostic then try telling some of your christian friends they "don't know if there's a god" and see how they respond.

atheist dot com was taken.

anyway not everything translates all that literally. meanwhile, there are levels of knowing, and since nobody KNOWS what anyone knows, saying NOBODY knows if there is a good is making an unsupported, unprovable claim.

Gnostic atheists know that there is no God based on the scientific idea that it is for the person claiming a thing exists to prove it.
Hence I’m gnostic that there are no purple people eaters 😉
Agnostics believe there’s a possibility as it’s not been proven either way. But the gnostic atheists are actually in a scientifically stronger position 🙂
I’m not putting agnosticism down, by the way, I’m agnostic.

Which of the 40,000 different gods being worshiped you even talking about "having knowledge of?..." All gods are just nonsense to keep the Sheeple from following someone who isn't trying to steal from them...

This is why I call myself agnostic Athiest. However in science something is only proven if there is direct evidence or after many attempts over time evidence cannot be found. Its typically a consensus to state the proof. We don't have 100% agreement so there are still people on both sides. For some, they are comfortable with the level of proof or non proof. They have concluded and "know" there is no God. I choose to remain as agnostic however I don't believe in magic. I believe the god is what the mind has created..

Really everyone is agnostic, it's just a matter of whether or not they are agnostic theist or an agnostic atheist. An agnostic theist is someone who leans more toward a god existing and an agnostic atheist is someone who leans more toward no god existing, even though they can't know one hundred percent for sure.

They just don’t know it yet.

Its a belief thing. Nobody "knows" but believers and Atheists think they know.

no proof no gods get it straight believing is not having facts Knowing is having facts. So yes we do no there is no gods just some like fairy tales

Not true! I am an atheist. I do not BELIEVE any gods exist. I DO NOT claim to KNOW that there is no force or being in the universe that we would call a god. I simply see no reason to believe that one does, or that any do.

When it comes to specific gods, however, it can be shown that they cannot exist. The god of the bible, for instance, is so contradictory it cancels itself out.

Ben, absence of proof is not proof of absence. I cannot sat you are wrong. I have not seen enough proof one way or the other. If you feel that you have seen enough that you are convinced of your beliefs, fine, I cannot argue.

That is the difference between Atheists and Agnostics. One is convinced, the other isn't

And, although some things are nigh impossible to prove (proving a negative and such). There is still no proof of that negative, so it is still a belief. You know gravity exists, it is observable and repeatable. There is no proof of the lack of a god (or gods), except the lack of proof there is one (some)?

Joanne, I do not see enough proof that god(s) exist, but see no proof they don't. I am undecided, hence Agnostic. If you are convinced of the negative, you are Atheist, yes.

My response was more to those that claim they "know" there is no god, or that there is one. I believe that in an hour and a half, when I am done working (working from home), I am going to grab some tea, go out in the back yard and light up a cigar. But, I don't know that.... I live in the landing pattern of DFW airport, a plane might crash into my house before then or something else might some up and change that. You seem to understand, you can believe without knowing.

As for the second part of your post, I agree. I am undecided on whether there is a higher intelligence behind this, but I am convinced that if there is a "God" no religion that exists comes close to accurately describing it/him/her. There is a chance such a being exists, but (I believe) religion is complete B.S.

"I don't know".

0

Tell that to the religious!

that is like talking to a wall

I guess the definition is kind of subjective, but agnostic might also mean “against knowledge “
