Southampton University has put a new, easy to use, Covid-19 test on trial. If successful, then it should be possible to test oneself at home and get the result in one hour. Fingers crossed, eh?

A saliva test would be great! The nasal swab is so uncomfortable that I will do anything to avoid having another one of those... especially if having to be tested when feeling just fine, especially if a negative covid-19 test becomes mandatory to board a plane or other events.

Whether done at home, for peace of mind, or to avoid having to go out to a doctor's office, I feel the saliva test, done at home or in a professional setting, would be a valuable addition to our covid-19 tool kit.

The fact that the numbers of positive/negative test results might not be counted by the community department of health should not be a reason to be against making testing more convenient and accessible. If someone tests positive, perhaps they should be encouraged to report it to their doctor or d.o.h.

I'm attending a community antibody test event later this week, to determine how many in our community may have had covid-19 before testing became available on our island. I believe I may have had it in Dec/Jan/Feb but I was denied testing as I had extended close contact with sick recent travelers to China, but I hadn't been to China myself during the past 14 days.

The denial of initial testing made me angry - while I was still sick - they swabbed me - but then I learned my test was canceled since I didn't meet their narrow criteria. There is still a faction of the community (including doctors) who are still against this community antibody testing, as I guess it would reveal shortcomings in our government's early approach to this virus, to severely limit testing, despite obvious signals of possible covid-19 illness.

I think it's good to know who has the virus, who had the virus, and then we can better protect ourselves and others.

We have rapid tests now and results take 4 hrs .
Back in March test results were 12 days long .
Home testing will keep the numbers out of reports . That’s a very bad idea .
To not mention , an accurate test needs someone to swab your brains out via nose . Even me , who I did hundred of these since March to patients , I feel uneasy bcz I know it hurts them . But if u don’t go deep enough results are negative . I can’t imagine bob at home having the discipline and courage I might add , to get that swab far in enough .

Read the article. The test uses a different approach and only needs one to spit into a test tube. NO SWABS - no pain!!

So many "hopeful" reports that fizzle, I am refusing to get excited....and, many times,it's simply a way to make $$ in the stock market...who funded this study, that's the first question that should be asked.....

The company behind the tech is a British company, "Optigene". There are another 4 British companies researching similar tech, so I don't think this will be a stock market price explosion along American lines!

That will be awesome if it works, however that does take the health departments out of the picture. Right now results go to the county health departments. They follow up to let folks know if they have to isolate or quarantine, and follow up with them for the duration. That is important for tracking the disease. If you are expected to "self report," I don't see that having a good outcome.

This .

Currently it will not be a home test, but long term that is indeed the hope. By then, if we're lucky, Covid-19 should be routinely "fixable".

Here's hoping because to be effective we need something in-expensive to be able to test ourselves regularly - like trump does, MF tests everyone around him, tax payers cover the costs and THEN the MF refuses to get the American people tested. Sorry I digress. I would like to see something available got All the people of the world.

This is very good news

I'm sure Trump would want to slow that down.

I have a buddy that hits me with crap like this but I have no desire to get tested in any way. If I feared enough to get tested then how many times would I have to be tested?

The idea is that you pass every test that you may be required to take, and that doing so should be as easy as possible. Yes I am an idealist.

I suggest a test every time you attended a Trump rally or street protest would be a good start.
If all you need do is spit into a test tube, then wait one hour in the comfort of your home to get the result (a bit like doing a pregnancy test) then a couple of kits should be on everyone's shopping list.
Being a university, not a price gouging medical company, the tests should be affordable!
