That sentimrnt- believing in yourself is not from god- just highlights the dismissal of an individual. It's basically the other side of the coin for religious people who basically believe that they are broken and need their god to fix them.

It does explain a lot of nonsense from the Christian right as they continue to make up and twist their doctrine.

So in other words we need someone else to tell us what to believe and how to behave? Basically, we have no mind and as such, cannot be judged because of our personal actions. Sort of like the Egyptian era where only the pharaoh and his family were immortal and all the lower people were just a means to those ends.

In the Christianity in which I was raised, this would mean that the devil is clever. He doesn't come right out and show who he is. He is subtle. He tricks us. He lures us in by making us think we can believe in ourselves, think for ourselves.

And, belief in one's self goes against God. We are not supposed to think of the self, what we want, what we can do "for ourselves." We are supposed think only of God, what HE wants of us. We are to see ourselves as NOTHING without God. Our will must be totally turned over to this God.

And, of course, others, who are supposedly in the know about what this God wants, are the one's telling us what it wants of us. We are not supposed to decide that for ourselves.

Trump supporting Christians have been told that tRump was sent by their God to protect them and do God's will. They were convinced that their God was going to make sure Trump won a second term. Who are they to question what they are being told? And, how can they accept that Biden won when it goes against what their God supposedly ordained?

When one looks at that from a different angle one can easily that it IS saying, " When one believes in oneself and knows their capabilities then one will usually try their best to exceed those capabilities, then if one ONLY believes exactly what they are told, then they will never strive to better themselves."
That, imo, is one of the many main-stays upon which religion thrives, i.e. " Think only as you ARE told by us, never ever think for or of yourself or your capabilities, NEVER strive to better yourself because YOU will become a perceived threat to OUR control over you."
