Hi, I am a new member and have already been welcomed by a couple of people, which is really nice.

I am a writer and teacher from Western Australia and, whilst I am an atheist, I enjoy the challenge of ideas and discussion. I have friends with all kinds of belief systems (although my 19 year-old son, who it turns out is an expert on everything, tells me my social media profile shows I enjoy living in an echo chamber!) and I have recently returned to university to study for a Masters of Creative Arts (in the U.S. an MFA).

I work with teenagers and so, alongside parenthood, trying to get a writing career off the ground, and some community theatre dabbling, my life is pretty fulfilling.

I read a lot (I teach Literature) and some of the recent books I have bought are:

“A Short History of Truth” by Julian Baggini
“Waking Up” by Sam Harris
“Enlightenment Now” Steven Pinker
“12 Rules for Life” Jordan B. Peterson

My 85 year-old dad shares my atheism and I am taking him to see Professor Dawkins speak next month. We can’t wait.

I love being/walking in nature, my life living in the hills of Perth, writing about the ocean and coastal life in the 1960s and 70s, maritime history and local shipwrecks. I am a bit obsessed with true crime and I adore horror as a genre.

I love a challenge. I am in remission from depression and use mindfulness techniques and Acceptance Commitment Therapy to assist me in enjoying life.

I am very lucky and appreciate my fortune and privilege.

Hi and welcome, I am on the NBN so you won't see this for a while. I will climb up on my roof, face west and yell. That would work better.

What's the problem with your NBN? Mine works ok, is reliable, and I'm on 50 mb. What I don't like is the high price, but then it is Australia, so what's new, and the fact we still use these damn routers which drop out. Weak link in the chain IMHO. We should have invested in national 4G 5G and so on. What's yours like?

@David1955 I am on fibre to the node, the node is 2klms away, our copper gets flooded by seawater. I had to downgrade from 50mbps to 25mbps and it still lags down to less than 1 at times, and I have just rebooted the modem again, constant drop outs.

@Rugglesby oh, jeez. No wonder you are pissed. Between the two political parties they've totally f-ed up what should have been a national investment infrastructure here in Oz. I've read that G5 G6 mobile will leave fibre optic behind in the foreseeable future. So it might just be the most expensive white elephant in the country.

@David1955 Yes, I am hoping 5G may do it, might be expensive at first.

Welcome from the remote southeast!

Welcome from Adelaide. The number of Australians here is growing. Great to see. Yours is an interesting story. Look forward to your contributions. I am unambiguously an atheist myself.

Hiya Tink!

I'm dividing my time between Canberra and Goulburn, but at least we are on the same continent.

I am also a writer, but also an avid devourer of books, music and film.

Anyway, great to see you here.

hi, @Tink, & welcome here! i used to live in fremantle until 4 years ago, when i moved back to the northcoast of nsw. i'm a born heathen from germany, a painter, singer, dancer, gardener &, most of all, an observer & enjoyer of my natural environment, wildlife, people, warts & all. there's a group here for writers & readers where you might meet some interesting characters - or at 'aussie sceptics', a group i launched. another one is 'FEATHERED FRIENDS'. enjoy 🙂

Thanks. I will look up the writers and readers group! Good to know ?

Hallo there I got confused with the Perth bit, but just realised there is a Perth in Australia, being a Brit and extremely poor at geography, (minus 4percent in mock o level) I have a hard time thinking of other countries my head swims.. I have always been an atheist and for me that is so much part of me it isnt of any importance to me at all just part of me. After a very varied set of jobs I was a lecturer in Person centred /Rogerian Counselling and later when I retired volunteered to work in mental health advocacy and sat on the Bamford Review of mental health and leanign disability as a Service User, which was awful. Our task was to review all of the committee work, overviewing everythign it was hard work thankless and seriously fraught by professionals underestimating us and then Patrick Bamford died, and it got worse! I must out myself as a huge glutton for punishment as I stayed as long as I could and now don't even know if any of our reccomendations were implemented. Good ot have you thanks for coming.

Welcome from Toowoomba, epicenter of Australia's most conservative electorate.

But great fruit, as I recall.

@David1955 Some excellent ones. Dragon fruit is just starting to be grown here.

Ha ha thanks

Random Question: If you were to reset Dunwich Horror somewhere is Australia, would it be on the northern or southern coast? Why?

Hail and welcome. They've treated me far better than I've deserved. You leave a good opening impression. Hope you stay.

Wow! Great question. Definitely southern coast for me for two reasons: 1. I have never been to the northern parts of the continent and so couldn’t imagine how they would work for such a story (not to say they couldn’t!); and 2. The rolling hills of the south west of my state of Western Australia mimics in many areas the rolling hills of New England (and England). There are some creepy little towns down south (or they could be re-imagined in that way for the purposes of such a tale) and I can imagine some of the more isolated houses being consumed by entities.

But probably even better would be a setting in our most southern state of Tasmania which has all the right attributes for the setting plus the violent and sinister side to its history ?

West coast of Tazzie.
Sven Svenson managed a real horror story (Angel Gear) set in the hills around Esk but there's no sea access.
Some of the places in north QLD that get cut off by tides on a daily basis and flooding during the wet. It'd have to be bent to fit the tropics though.
Norfolk Island? Or an analogy?

Welcome aboard. By your picture, I’d guess you’re suffering from DID.

No, I just like the metaphor it suggests of different perspectives of ourselves and others; subjectivity, I guess ?
