Could Footie be the new world religion, spanning all of the other major religions with a common love of a sport/soap opera drama? If it is then would it be any worse than the established religions with their jihads, crusades and general persecutions?

The recent European Super League fiasco shows that football has something in common with religion -- Greed

Sorry if my English fails me here.

Here in Brazil there is a large part of the population that cares more about soccer games than anything else, to the point you are considered alien if you don't root for any team. A lot of people here joke with soccer being a second religion.

Also before the covid it was not rare to read news of people who died in fights because of a match result (or even before the game happened) just because opposing crowds faced each other "by accident" on their way. On matches that involve the bigger teams, they needed to mobilize a large part of the city police to guarantee that the fans from each team would not cross paths before getting to the soccer arena (or leaving after).

Also, wanna see brazilians disappear? Walk the streets during a world cup match with the Brazil team in game. Post-apocalyptic feeling guaranteed! Maybe we all go to a soccer pocket dimension? Idk haha

Not hating on soccer. In my opinion people are the problem and not the sport itself, but this situation kind of sucks.

I feel the same about American football - it's like a religion (but without the mob violence in soccer-centric countries). Having lived in Big Ten college towns, I always keep track of the football schedule - a good time to experience empty streets during the game, or bad traffic jams just before or after games.

Not so different than hockey in Canada.

What is footie?

What the rest of the world calls football but the Americans call soccer.
