It is hard to deal with irrational people, religious or not.

Some family physicians in Alberta say they are dealing with an increasing number of aggressive, misinformed and untrusting patients who want a note exempting them from getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

Two of three Calgary doctors who spoke to The Canadian Press also said some people have yelled racist comments at them after they declined to write a note because the patients did not have health conditions known to cause serious side-effects to a shot.

“They mostly comment on my brown skin and hijab” said Dr. Sakina Raj. “I’m also Muslim … so they come to religion and they get personal with that.

“It’s really scary because I feel sometimes they were so abusive verbally, that they could harm us. But I still am kind to them. I calm them down nicely. I’m too experienced to be stressed by them.”

Raj and another Calgary physician said more than three patients a day are asking their clinics for an exemption. Dr. Mukarram Zaidi said one patient tried to bribe him with $200.

Zaidi and Raj said racist comments and an aggressive tone are regular occurrences these days, but they don’t want to focus on that. What’s most concerning to them is that misinformed patients are walking into their clinics.

Some patients tell stories about family members in other countries having outlandish reactions to the vaccine. Others say their religious leader has told them not to get a shot. Zaidi said some patients don’t want to hear any scientific information at all.

“What boggles me is that they come in, trust me for everything else besides COVID. They allow me to examine them for everything else. It frustrates me to understand the mentality of these individuals.”

No. When you have the government under Trudeau that is trying to shove the vaccine down their throats, it makes a lot of people not want to do it especially when Trudeau threatens consequences for not doing so.

Yeah? And you're an idiot.

I think you missed the point of the article...

@Storm1752 no I did not. Speaks to the broader context of the fear people have in the West of the coof.

You hear of claims of adverse reactions and/or "breakthrough" infections, but I think most of that is made up.
Besides, it's their refusal to get vaccinated which has led to the Delta variant, and who knows what other variants will emerge thanks to their POLITICAL stance?

Yes, apart from those who genuinely suffer conditions such that they would seriously become ill if they were vaccinated, I'm inclined to think that anti-vaxxers are used as political tools - possibly.

This is becoming more and more common. Just saw on the news, MSNBC, that a group of tourists, from Texass, attacked a restaurant staff person when she asked proof of vaccination. They started punching her in the face and the cops had to be called. Why does violence seem to be the only fall back position for these fools?

Tell them to join the JW's, they exempt themselves from everything and get away with it.

Just to be transparent, the JW's have been told to get the jab and to stock up on basic food stuffs in the event that this pandemic gets really bad. My mother is a JW and a good person except for that delusion around Jehovah. My older brother died of a brain aneurysm, he might have been saved with a blood transfusion but his JW wife stood by and watched him die with a JW lawyer by her side to prevent the medical staff from taking the required action to save him.
Revenge really because he took her by force and impregnated her, so she had to marry him. The JW church sanctioned all of it, little wonder I have nothing but contempt for religions.

@SnowyOwl. That is sick, it has always dumbfounded me as to the lengths religious people will go to justify their shit in the name of God, as if God gave license to do what ever the hell they want and to make themselves feel good about it.

@MrDragon And that's why I have been an Atheist since I was 13 and therefore free to tell the religious leaders to go take a flying fuck at a rolling donut. The road to Atheism is paved with well read Bibles, I managed to go cover to cover 2.5 times.

They don't do blood transfusions - ones I knew took vaccines, of course now, who knows what their gods say.

What sort of note could you possibly get that would say you are exempt from getting the Covid vaccine? If there is such a thing it does not allow you access to businesses, corporations, or airlines that require the shot. OK, you got your note but you cannot fly, eat, or come inside to buy our goods. Sorry. That's just how it is. Strangely, some religious assholes will be calling this the biblical "mark of the beast."

The article says that some patients have health conditions known to cause serious side-effects to a shot. I don't know what kind of conditions exactly, but if a doctor issues an exemption note for a shot due to one or more of these conditions, I would assume it is legit.

I have a friend with an auto immune disorder, her immune system is attacking her own body. If she gets any kind of vaccination (she can not even have a tetanus booster) her immune system goes into overdrive and she ends up in hospital on massive doses of drugs to calm her system back down (her last tetanus shot nearly killed her) She relies on others to keep her safe and isolates herself when flu season comes around. Thankfully in the NT flu season is quite short lived.

@Ryo1 Doctors can issue an exemption all they want. This does not allow the "exempt person" to fly, mingle in stores and clubs, go on military bases, or freely enter any building they want to. They will be restricted.

@DenoPenno So what solution would you suggest for those with any of the "conditions", like @Budgie's friend, who would become seriously ill as a result of getting a vaccination?

@Ryo1 It would simply mean that this person could not go anywhere a vaccine was required and that others might have to do their shopping, etc. for them. It would in no way involve a "free pass" to just go and do what you want to do. Rules are rules and it is all for the safety of everyone.

@DenoPenno So what you are saying is that she has to live the rest of her life in her house with people doing things for her. She is the person at risk if she goes out of her house and mixes.

She is all for vaccinations and her children and partner are all fully vaccinated, she would get it if it would not possibly kill her. So sorry she does get to move in the community and it is up to each individual place as to whether or not she is allowed in or to use their services. She carries her medical report from her doctor to explain to places why she is unvaccinated, if they request it. (we don't actually have that as an issue yet where I live)

I also taught a young boy who had so many allergies including egg, now at the time (I don't know about the newer vaccines) many of them were created in eggs so to give him a vaccination would induce anaphylactic shock. So he has to be vaccinated and given a shot of adrenaline to see if they can beat the anaphylaxis or he can not attend school? If a disease rose up in the community he was kept at home until it had passed before coming to school. He is only alive as he had another medical condition was in hospital for it and was given something with egg in it (he was really young) they had to call in a crash cart to bring him back. They then did allergen testing and found he could not tolerate any form of nut, eggs, grasses,(although they only gave him hives). He had an epipen with him at all times.

There are people who have valid medical reasons they are being swamped under the masses who are screaming out in some sort of denial, antivaxxer, oppositional defiance way. Those people need their butts kicked.

@Budgie What I am saying is what I already said. It is very simple. Corporations, clubs , and restaurants who require you to be vaccinated are not going to make an exception for you. Letters claiming you should be an exception do not change the rules of corporations and others.

@DenoPenno
Governments & businesses are making exceptions, providing valid MEDICAL exemptions, for people like budgie's friend. The added benefit of vaccinating everone who can be, is the protection of those who validly can't be. As soon as vaccination rates are high enough, and infections reduced, everyone will be unrestricted. In the interim, equitable treatment of people without choices, is a measure if a decent society.

Alberta: The Texas of Canada. Figures.

As soon as someone gets either aggressive and refuses to listen they should have to leave the surgery.

Hi there. Yes, they should be told to leave. They will remain misinformed, though. Is there any way they can be educated better?

@Ryo1 Maybe some kind of re-education program but of course the anti vaxxers would scream blue murder about their freedoms.

Yeah, that's predictable.

If they want the note to not get the covid vaccine, then make them sign a form say they can't get treatment for covid at the hospital.

That would be a fair agreement.

The thing is, should they catch COVID, they can pass it on to others. My understanding of getting vaccinated is not only to protect myself but also to protect others so that they don't catch COVID from me.

People... unfortunately are more irrational than we would like to believe. Doctors, despite many are religious, they studied and learned the profession in a rational way. Of course, there are good and bad ones but I see no reason not to trust them.
