I'll try to use simple words for you, so you can comprehend. People believed Smollet's claim that he had been attacked by white supremacists because attacking people of color is what white supremacists do. The idea that he was telling the truth was a reasonable assumption. When it became clear that Smollet lied, non-racists were upset because his dishonest claim created a set-back in credibility for the many, many people of color who actually do experience attacks from white supremacists. Most white supremacists successfully operate due to the popular notion that their whiteness automatically gives them more credibility than a darker skinned person, and unfortunately this unfair pattern seems to hold a lot of water with other light-skinned people. Micro-aggressive, systemic racism is real and insidious, and this is one of the many ways it manifests. This is easy for most women to understand, since we fight the same discrimination regarding our credibility when we are assaulted.
