Songs of the season which are more appropriate for those of us who object to Christian hymns or the usual seasonal cliches. I’ll start with my favorite artist, Jackson Browne.

I've always loved this one by Dan Fogelberg.

Not sure that this one is at all appropriate, but it's a family fave, considering our sense of humor...

First things first: My two co-favorite "traditional" American Christmas songs that literally everyone has heard are "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," the latter of which appears on the above youtube link.

Kelly Clarkson! Queen of Pop, in my book. Forget the tired criticisms that she's "just" a former reality show contestant. She is nothing short of a master of vocal technique, lyric interpretation, and dynamic performance. She can sing ANYTHING and do it well. But her Christmas album, "Wrapped in Red," I stumbled across and bought without having heard it. So glad I did. Just musically, it is terrific. But most of the songs are also new. Aside from the closing nod to tradition with "Silent Night" as a trio, the rest is completely secular. My favorite song on the album is "Just for Now."

Gee... I got lost. I'll come back on this.

I’m not a huge fan of Mariah Carey, but I love her song All I Want for Christmas is You.

Or maybe this spoof? "All I Want for Christmas Is... Jews"
