I am beginning to see more articles and posts on social media criticising 'The new atheism' and its evangelists.
Do members feel that we might be about to experience a theist backlash against us?
Just the usual inane drivel and ranting from the people at the shallow end of the gene pool, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Now if they start using words like CRUSADE and stockpiling Tiki Torches then I would start giving it more of my attention, until then I expect they'll just keep bombing Muslims in the hopes of bringing about the Rapture they're all so enthralled with. Jeebus they are a bunch of morons but at least without pitchforks and torches for the moment.
There always have been. They use to burn us at the stake.
Christians are always out to get rid of non Christians, such as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and we are just part of the anti theist group that is added to their hatred.
Might be about? When wasn't there a backlash? They're still laws on the books requiring US citizens to have a religion to run for political office. No they're not enforced but they do still exist. The louder we get the louder they get. It's the way all opposing views work.
I expect so. We're getting "uppity", like those colored folk in the 60s. And the theists are getting scared.Canada and Europe are way less religious than America and God hasn't struck them down or anything,so we're looking better. And the Ivangelical movement's devotion to tRump is making them look way worse.
The closest atheist I know is no evangelist. Most of us just want to go about our daily business. I think some of us are being called "evangelist" because we speak out against irrationality and blind obedience. In the past most of us just didn't speak up. Now many of us do.
It's silly. There is no atheist religion so how can there be atheist evangelists? Anyone who believes that doesn't know what it means to be atheist. There is no belief.
I doubt the backlash is against “us”. I suspect it is against the particular brand of atheism the “new atheists” are peddling. It’s a slash and burn atheism that expressly seeks to destroy all religion... and that just ain’t gonna fly. It’s time for the horsemen to learn something about horses.
The backlash has started with all the attempts to try and make this a Christian nation. So many of our religious freedoms are being attacked and it is not just the atheists that will suffer. However, we, with the help of FFRF and the Humanists are winning.
I get backlash for skateboarding.
Lowered expectations save sanity.
Dress like the Virgin Mary and carry a gun while you skateboard. You'll be fine. J/K
I think every movement has varying factions.
Some kick the door in, others take a more conciliatory approach.
Each serves its purpose towards the greater end of diminishing religions sway on law and policy.
. Religion is failing. They're losing adherents. They will get more vocal and violent as they do. It's nothing new from them.
There has been an ongoing backlash since the first religion began. I see no reason for things to be changing now.
If history is any guide, anyone who contradicts religious doctrine is subject to persecution. I see little reason to assume that we will be spared. Remember, people who believe in deities believe in the existence in things for which there is no evidence! What is to keep them from deciding that our ideas represent a threat, and then lashing out?
like banning us from public office is not enough ?[ u s edition]
It's time to be cautious, I think. Religion is dying off in many parts of the world. Sadly we have American Taliban, and they tend to be well armed and are very afraid of any sort of progress or open mindedness. I'm still pretty out there with my non-belief, but when it gets heated I just ask for the same level of respect they want from me. If that doesn't work my evil twin tends to come out. But now I try hard to just end the conversation - and contact, if necessary. I live in the bible belt too.
My generation is dominant now, and the most religious and they are getting desperate. When we are gone I think religion will fade.
Others, today opossing religion, will convert and fill the space left by those that will leave us. Hope is central in atracting people, and as you grow older and life becomes hopeless, and meaningless, and above all "dreamless" people will seek and find confort to their fears in the false promises of the church.
With the ignorantass sonofabitch we have trying to lead lemmings, sure, we're probably next. I'm brown and female and already terrified. In the last 15 months, I have been approached by total strangers (male) and intimidated/pressured for attention and even grabbed and sexually assaulted at gunpoint. All since this ass took office and made bigotry and assault of women OK.
So sad. I was treated similarly when I was young being a "dumb blonde". Unwanted advances and rape based on the way I looked. I relate. It's incredible that person rules us. I would have hoped we would have become more enlightened by now
@ScienceBiker
Yes definitely. My location SUCKS!
@confidentrealm
I'm sorry it happened to you too. I Hope you're ok now. It changes you doesn't it? You can PM me if you'd like. I'd like.
Unfortunately, this 'new atheism' tends to attract a lot of smug, trilby-wearing asshats who blither about red pills and start most if their sentences with 'Actually,' whose attention-grabbing ways ensure that they end up being seen more than the rest of us.
Never had... I am not a militant looking for xians to argue for the sake of waging war!
