What is Juneteenth? Much of the last two years went right by me. My health disasters left me wondering about all kinds of stuff. I am embarrassed to ask.

@creative51 Thank you.

June 19th 1865 which is 2 years after the emancipation proclamation was signed and orderd that all slaves should be free. Galveston Texas finally set the last slaves free, after General Granger of the Union army ordered the city to free its slaves.
By the way the state of Mississippi didn't officially pass a law to abolish slavery until February 20 2013.

@noworry28 I did not know that about Mississippi, although somehow Iā€™m not surprised!? šŸ™„

@noworry28 Didn't Mississippi also just recently take laws against miscegenation off the books?

@BufftonBeotch They tried back in March but I don't think it passed. I haven't checked lately.

I doubt we have very many of them on here, at least that's my perception on the boards here.

Wikipedia was recommended, so I will start there.

Doesnā€™t matter if thereā€™s only one on hereā€¦.šŸ¤”

@Buck I get that, but it' still true this site has very few. Jus' sayin'. It's cultural, I would guess, because for most black folks, the church is an even bigger thing growing up than it is for most white folks, because it's not only about religion, it is the center of their community. So that might account for fewer folks dropping out of religion entirely.

There are not very many African American but there are some. Church is more deeply embedded in the African American culture in some ways, but often with a Liberation Theology and not nearly the oppressive and negative experience so many of us remember.
And the music is usually way better.

@BufftonBeotch All true.

This non African-American hopes someday African Americans will finally have as much freedom as I do.

Everyone should celebrate freedom.

I celebrated today because I have a black family member!!šŸ˜Š

@Buck I have a smoother-furred mini panther named Yibambe.
My Chromebook has temporarily eaten all my downloads and pics so I an't show him off right now.
(Google wanted my previous password to restore my files)

Yes, juneteenth is important.

Yes, it is. I sat on the porch and called out Happy Juneteenth to every person driving by. Nobody answered. ( Most were palefaces.
My granddaughter called and said she was ready to go to the Motor Vehicle Department. She was very disappointed to learn about Juneteeth a federal holiday. She is the one with the mixed-race babies. I cannot die yet. My work here is not done.
