As if sprains, broken bones, a mouse infestation, and the death of my sister were not enough, my A/C stopped working in the hottest summer in the 24 years I have been in MO.

I live near a resort area where the population has better than tripled since the bug hit , and the power fluctuations are so extreme that you can't keep a circuit board bin anything ( local power co is upgrading, but it takes time) I gave up and put window units in last year. I don't cry if they fry ..and I still have a refrigeration tech certification laying around here somewhere .
Question did the outside unit quit , but make noises like it was trying? The most common failure in extreme heat is about a $5 part that you could easily replace

I'm sorry that all these things are raining on you. I explain it with the phrase "things happen." Glad your son put in a window unit. Now go out and buy yourself 2 Lasko Wind Machine fans. They are plastic and round. Walmart has them and you will have to learn where to put them so as to help that window unit. This takes a little experimentation.
My AC has a freon issue and it leaks. Now I have propane as a coolant (R-290) simply added in. R-22 bit the dust. My house is a moble home kept at 78 degrees and I run one big ceiling fan and one Wind Machine. The air blows on me and I do not sweat. Recently had my oldest daughter here for overnight. She had to admit it was nice and comfortable in here.

Yesterday might have been the hottest day of the summer 2022, and my car's AC decided not to work. Today it worked a tad better, for a while. But now I have an appointment for the car to go to the shop.
A few years ago in July my house AC died. I had to move to a motel for a few days til it could be replaced. I had thought I could handle the heat, I grew up in a house without AC here in Nebraska. Nope, about 10:30pm I realized I might have some serious health problems if I didn't get out of there. I had to leave my poor blind kitty behind. I called my office to say I was not going to be in the next day. And I checked on the kitty daily, put ice water down for her. That was not a good week.
I am sorry for your trials, trouble does seem to come in bunches. But rest assured, if there is a god he hates everyone equally, that I am convinced of. He gives kids cancer. If there is a god he is a warped son of a bitch and I want nothing to do with him.
