"[Mrs Struhs] goes into detail about being told by her husband that if Elizabeth did not get her insulin, she would die," Magistrate Kay Philipson told the court.

During the committal hearing for another defendant, the court was told Mr Struhs had struggled when his daughter became ill but had been reassured by the religious group to keep his faith.

The court heard that Mr Struhs had not believed in the healing power of God until August 2021 and that a week prior to his wife's release from prison in December 2021 he had begun "embracing the healing".

Mr Struhs was probably told he was a controlling white male and needed to listen to his wife. She was going to be released from prison so was probably seen as strong. That god had protected her and he should believe in her. Women and religion. That's what this seems to indicate for me.

Lock them up and throw away the key, please. "The miracle of her rising?" Be honest and ask yourself how many have risen from the grave. Evidence shows none. People that make these claims have zero evidence. This shows me they do not live in the real world, nor in this century as one commenter has said. It appears they all had a sickness much worse than diabetes.

I wasn’t aware of that story, it’s appalling.

You can clearly see the bias in this statement…
"She had a sickness and she died of it.“

Diabetes, a sickness? Really?

It’s like the religious nuts, especially in the UK, who persuade parents that their disabled children can be cured by prayer. I find that repulsive.

The real sickness is in these people's heads.

@anglophone I wholeheartedly agree.

Are you aware of Gloriavale?

Religious community in the South Island. The lid is slowly being lifted off that.

Interesting how the strategy of ex community members at the moment is to go for the employment angle and litigate for the back wages owed for years of working without being paid. Could bankrupt the community.

Gloriavale could be liable for millions of dollars in unpaid wages

@Zealandia Yikes!

I have a memory of seeing something like that in recent months, though I don't remember the name.

More generally, it makes me wonder how many other exploitative religious organisations worldwide there are that are currently flying under the radar. The Roman Catholic Church flew under the radar with its child exploitation for the best part of a century in Australia.

@anglophone Yes, you do wonder what other exploitative religious groups are out there.

Arise Church has also been in trouble here too:

The Auckland branch is closing its doors now.

The good news is that there’s finally some accountability going on there.

These people are not living in the 21st century; they're in the 12th.

Could be the shortest trial in Australia, prosecution sets out its case in one maybe two days, defense nil as they don't have lawyers, jury stand leave room decide in the hallway and walk back in with guilty unless of course it is packed full of religious nutters.

Australia is quite a secular country, very unlikely that there’s going to be religious nutters on the jury.

@Zealandia You would be surprised, I mean 14 people just watched a girl die because of their religion.

@Budgie Yeah, maybe I should have qualified that comment a bit.

Do you know if the State of Queensland is going to use a jury in this case. I couldn’t figure that out.

@Zealandia If they plead not guilty I assumed it would go to trial which means a jury. My knowledge of the law is not absolute so there may be other procedures. They might also get a court appointed lawyer.

@Budgie See what happens. They refused legal representation, which is a bit baffling.

@Zealandia They 100% believe god will protect them so they don't need legal representation. God's law is all that matters.

I hope they get life in prison. I hope they get tortured everyday for there time in prison.

That would mean nothing to them - they would see it as their god testing them. I really cannot understand their level of imbecility.

The best punishment there is.

They watched her die and did nothing to help the child. They all knew what she needed and refused to give it to her. They are trying to hide behind a religion to absolve themselves of guilt. Not one has expressed remorse and the justice system must take that into account when sentencing. I hope they all get the maximum sentence.

They have driven another nail into the coffin of religion in Australia. Jailing them seems a rather blunt weapon in the battle against religiously inspired stupidity.

@anglophone I hope you are right. Zealots are a hard nut to crack.
