I am so tired of listening to people in the workplace talk about god nonstop. It is just unreal how they cannot shut up about it. I literally am paid to do a job and so is everyone else there. Having to endure any professional conversation at work about magical gods is absolutely unprofessional. I cannot literally go one single day without somone invoking magical thinking in the workplace. I never wonder why America doesnt function well in any industry because magical thinking is so prevelant at all industries it's a miracle any industry functions at all, with people making terrible decisions based on this and not sticking to professional reasons . I cannot stand to be in a meeting and someone starts up with gods will or have faith or I will pray for you. Can we just please stick to the matter at hand and use real solutions for real problems? I would love to work anywhere where I can go 1 day without this going on..and none of the religious references, chants or rituals EVER help solving a PROFESSIONAL workplace problem so why do people keep defaulting to them???

Can you wear headphones? Might consider moving or changing jobs. Start the planning so when the opportunity arises, you will be prepared.

Copy this as a poster and post it on the wall when no one is looking . . .

I have been tempted to say, when they say that fucking god bless you thing . . . "
Yes, after all ZEUS has been very good to me!"

Funny!

The lion's share of effort required to work is tolerating other people. That's what I figured I was getting paid for.

I remember the resentment I felt being exposed to people's expression of religiosity. Just sickening to see people who have abdicated reason in exchange for false promises, stupidity and toxicity.

It is like they know too, deep down they are trying to make excuses for illogical thinking but wallow in it anyway. You can see it in their eyes they do not believe their own bs.

@ClareCK People have a lot of time on their hands and I have to believe even the truest believers consider the possibility they are wrong. I have to believe they are lying if they deny it. And the truth is, the paradigm where belief is wrong and reality is right is intrinsically much more concordant with reality than with religious delusion.

One of the advantages of working in bars is Jesus really doesn't come up. I heard the owner's mother of our home bar mention Jesus. She lives in Houston, so she doesn't come there but maybe once a year. That is the only time l have seen her. That is the only time l have heard Jesus mentioned in a bar. Heathenism is a beautiful thing.

Clearly I need to spend more time in bars and less time ... everywhere else?

@Lauren Pretty much. Way more honesty in bars.

Well in Lousiana bars, when I lived there, they make a come to Jesus drink that did invoke magical thinking after consumption! Haha but yes, I agree, a good way to ruin a bar vibe is to mention God!

You are absolutely right, and there are countless reasons the magical thinking exists, none of which are logical to us. But on a more personal level, if it's that pervasive, it's unlikely to change anytime soon so please feel free to come vent here whenever you need to defuse.

I'm in Texas where the entire state operates like your work environment. This past year I had to consider whether or not to continue going to one of my doctors because she changed offices and this poster awaited me there. Since she's the only doctor that's been able to adequately address my thyroid issues, I decided to stay, but my blood pressure rises every time I'm in that waiting room.

Until they come to their senses, we have to be persistent with distraction and changing the subject whenever the god stuff starts.

Oh wow! Lol. Yes, this! Doctors offices having religious posters up, like wth??? People can be offended by just being a different religion or atheist, why would they do this??? I lived in Houston for 4 years and did not hear as much religious speech as in Michigan! Like wow, is the Midwest really the new Bible belt? I also lived in CA and Louisiana and I have to say Michigan is like nonstop with religion in the workplace. Abandon all hope, ye who sled into here! Haha

I hate have a blessed day. I prefer the Texan, blessed your heart which means a few things.

You are cute!
You are dumb.
Run. You are about catch a beating.

Ahahaha

My theory is cold weather makes people more inclined to warm themselves with the thoughts of magical gods. I don't care if people need a god or are religious, just leave me alone with it please as I also have the right to NOT HEAR ABOUT IT.

This part is hard for many zealots. I also notice the ratio of men atheist to women, even here, is way different. Seems like women are the most afraid to be religion-free.

People always ask me why I am not adopting the forced relgion of my youth foisted upon me and I say, to be honest I just don't care. They so cannot accept that statement. Idk why.

Of all the crap and barriers I face as a woman in a man's world and under the proverbial male gaze, why add a god's gaze and scrutiny to that mess? I wish I was invisible sometimes so I could move about without scrutiny.

Thanks Lauren, for your comment. We fellow women atheists are hard to find!

One woman in a waiting room at an ER told me god told her I was coming there. I am like, hmmm..so god waits to speak to you until I, a stranger with a severe flu pops by? Lol. Okay. And what significance does this hold?

I love living my life without the fear that is self-imposed on people by THEMSELVES.

Like, would you punch yourself in the face everyday just to stay humble? No, then why shackle your mind with a god?

Baffling to me as a woman.

I work in California, and we only had one person like that.
When he threatened to kill people if necessary to end abortion I reported him to HR.
We still talk, when the job requires it, about the job.
We don't even say hello or goodbye to one another.
It's better this way.

Wow! Lol. I worked in the desert in CA and there were a ton of religious people there, but not so much in L.A.

I love how men are obssessed with women who are total strangers and/or their babies as if they have the right to direct their decisons and freedoms. Can I then picket outside your home to clean up the nest you sleep in in lieu of a bed (apparently a new trend for single men) and force you to clean your home and prove it to me upon inspection? Can I not allow you to play video games or watch sports and be materialistic and make you experience personal growth through therapy and not emotional labor dump on the next woman you date? Ahahah

Imagine a woman threatening suicide if a man got circumsized as an adult?

That male gaze bs again operating inside the heads of total strangers doing mental gymnastics to justify being a boundary jumping lunatic. Lol. But wait, it's for god's purpose they invade women's decisions!

Totally agree that you should not have to tolerate this. Unfortunately it's going to take a sympathetic employer to put an end to it, but with the decline of religion this will become more prevalent. It is still dangerous to come out of the closet where there might be a backlash but rest assured that those of us with nothing to lose are raising the issue publicly with a view toward increasing acceptance. That's all I have for you but thanks for posting and please keep us informed. This is a very important issue.

This can be viewed as a hostile work environment. Do you have an HR dept?

@pamagain When SCOTUS strikes down the Civil Rights Act over this lawsuit, the floodgates for coerced religious practices are going to open wide.

[eeoc.gov]

You are welcome. Funny enough, I have worked in public, private and nonprofit sector and government workers violate federal law by discussing god at work the most! Lol

@pamagain yes and they talk about god too. Lol.
I do make complaints and it dies down for a while. But whether verbal or written it pops up again from someone else. Without fail.

@pamagain, @LovinLarge scary to think.

They can talk all they want. They will all be worm food soon enough. If they don't know that, it's not your job to tell them. Just ignore their babbling gibberish.

4

I am sorry to hear that you have to work with people who are suffering from the God addiction. That addiction is as disruptive as the addictions to cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Yes. It is.

4

The reason, if indeed, you could call it a reason is that they have nothing constructive to offer in the situation and maybe they imagine invoking god will somehow resolve a problem or at least make them appear a good person.

They're probably whistling in the dark.

THIS. Hahaha

I have 0 knowledge of how to solve this occupational problem, so I will throw some god on it and sprinkle it with batshit theories of magical thinking and add a prayer on top. No.

Use your professional education and experience to apply work skills to a work problem. Thank you for being a professional at a job!
