So you're a podium pedant?

I was brought up to believe that if another adult is not your actual student or offspring, it is rude to publicly correct their grammar or etiquette. Even then, it can be rather gauche. If you can't stop yourself from correcting them, at least respect the person enough to do so privately.

It seems funny to do this but 'lecturn' , and 'people' ,are spelled wrongly but i guess you did that on purpose in order to see who would correct you. I am not bothered about peoples spelling mistakes , or typos, so long as I can understand what is being said.

Typos are fine as long as ppl dn't rite wit 2 many acronym, short t3xt type or fonetikly. I h8 that $h17.

When I was young I made some ill-informed comments about music to a man I had no idea was the concertmaster of the New York Philarmonic Orchestra. He just smiled and said nothing, and now decades later I remember what a kind and distinguished gentleman he was.

My brain chose to bypass typos ..... Not my job to correct no one and besides, almost everyone hates the Nazi grammars.... Once again, you asked and I have been beaten a lot lately that going forward I am going to have to add this disclaimer to all my comments: If you are not going to like the answer then do not ask the question

Not in general, rude behavior in my opinion. Only in a discussion and clarification needed. I did with my children for education. Staff member I supervised if needed. I took revenge on many who corrected me publicly. Seen a couple people at the bar get the crap knocked out them for doing it.

Hmm. Now that you bring it up, I've always used podium for both, although I'm pretty sure I knew it wasn't the right word for the thing you stand behind. Now I know the name of that as well. Thank you.
With regards to correcting others, I do it in my head but not normally out loud. My friends occasionally recognize my raised eyebrows and might ask.
The one exception would be for someone calling a Ziggurat a Pyramid... Admittedly, that doesn't come up very often.

I don't know how people decide they are the designated corrector of such mundane stuff. I find it rude and condescending, unless, I ask for your opinion.

I could care less as long as l understand what they are saying. Having traveled all over the country playing music in big cities and small towns, dealing with regional accents and different levels of education everywhere, l find it all interesting. I find grammar Nazis snobbish and boring. If that is the kind of shit you spend your time worrying about you are leading a charmed and possibly a very closed life.

Better things to do than worry about petty stuff like that.

Don't be a spelling or definition Nazi, we're adults here to discuss topics of interest, not to correct grammar.

I love to correct people when they use the word "acronym" incorrectly. Something is only an acronym if you pronounce the initials as a word. Like NASA, but not ISS.

My boss can’t say “idea” it’s always “I have a great ideal”. Drives me fucking crazy!

I'll usually do it quietly rather than in public if at all possible. Was a mature age student and used to pull my lecturers up if they made a mistake or where doing something silly without realizing it, was often the only one out of over 100 that would. Had a lovely international relations lecturer I caught up with after a lecture to correct her pronunciation of some technical word, didn't do it at the time because it took me ten minutes to work out what the word should have been. She was so grateful because she was Malaysian and had been saying the word the way it was spelled and nobody had ever corrected her. She actually asked me to pull her up in the lectures if there were anymore that popped out.

What if the lectern is on a podium?

I fight the urge.
If I can understand what you say, your intent, that'll do.
Although I never let "I could care less" slide without a "yeah ? How much less ?"

I actually make it a point to tell people to feel free to correct me if they find me saying something incorrectly over and over. It's like having spinach in your teeth. I want someone to tell me so I can correct myself and look ignorant to as few people as possible.
On the flip side, I don't offer corrections, unless it seems like it's unintentional and repetitive.
I had a coworker who always wrote "do to these circumstances"...I finally let him know. I think he's better off for it.

I certainly don't offer corrections for typos, accents or subtle mispronunciations. Probably because I suffer from those frequently!
But I would rather learn something new or have a correction offered than go through life not knowing I've been wrong about something forever.

Hearing anyone say, "as of yet", makes me insane. Unfortunately, most of the time that I
hear it, it's on television, and I can't correct the person.

OK, I'm jumping in.The entire English speaking people in the world are mis-spelling and mis-pronouncing the word , 'airplane'. It is not an 'air plane', it is an ,'aero plane'. One word aeroplane , even my spell checker can't get it right. Okay I'm done ranting on my lectern, er, podium, er, soapbox or whatever is good to spew from.

Everyone needs a hill to die on. Might as well pick one you care about. That having been said, how often do people talk really about lecterns and podiums?
