What do you do when someone tells you to “have a blessed day?”
I had this happen to me this evening when we went to pick up pizza for dinner. I told her thank you, you too. Life is too short to worry about such trivial things.
I reply "Thank you, you too!" because I don't have to believe their nonsense to appreciate their well wishes and also wish them well in a language they understand. This is generally something that is only said to me by strangers so it feels wrong to respond with "I don't believe in your God and therefor don't believe I can be blessed by Him".
I say "And you, thank you".....
More often than not, it's meant as a pleasantry, no real reason to take offense to something like that. It's like getting offender when some says "God bless you" after a sneeze......
As long as someone is not doing or saying something that I have to defend against, I just let it go. Really, is this hurting you? Is this threatening your well being? Is it putting you in danger? If not, what the hell. Why make something into a problem, when it isn't? It's just a pleasantry. Are people supposed to ask if you are an atheist before they wish you a blessed day?
Two answers: say “Thank you. “
Say “Blessed Be” like witches do.... might be close enough to make them wonder which church you go to. Unless they are familiar with witches...
Of course you have to hope they don’t attend one of those churches that are all like “Kill all the witches!!”
Usually people say this as they are leaving so I just say "bye" or "see you later"
I say "Uh, yeah, thanks, you too." Hopefully they get the hint. Most are totally oblivious, off in their own world, and any thing less than cussing them out won't break through the fog. Oh well. You could say "Blessed be." the Wiccan greeting, if they get it, it might make them avoid you. But there's still that fog, so it probably wouldn't help.
Maybe pretend like you think THEY are offering a Wiccan greeting. “Oh are you Wiccan too? We usually just say “blessed be.”
I say politely , " thanks I needed that". You get some really stunned looks on their faces sometimes.
I avoid eye contact, shake my head and say "Jesus Christ", then walk away.
?
Who are you to bless me?
ouch!
It is silly for people to bless me after I help them, especially the homeless. I just told them back if you can bless me, then you should bless yourself, I do not need it, but you do.
I don’t get hung up on how people express themselves socially...pretty much the same way I don’t accept people getting hung up on how I express MYSELF...whether or not it comes from a sincere wish that I be blessed, who am I to judge...?
Believe (or don’t) what works for you.
I say thank you. To me, they are conveying what they believe to be a positive comment/ emotion. I appreciate the sincerity.
