Some people are attracted to persons who will cause them controversy, adversity and pain. Thsi is primarily because it makes them feel alive and their life won't be boring. There is an ancient Chinese curse that goes "May you have an interesting life". "interesting" in this sense means lots of problems, rather than a sedate boring life. Some people want an "interesting life", although it may not be a conscious longing.

I do it all the time. Two fascinating, handsome, penniless, tortured artists/poets as husbands was probably not a good choice. But boy we had fabulous times until the bubble burst. I wouldn't change any of it.
I always think of Interesting as a comment when shown something not appealing, a softer comment than what I am really thinking
My first husband actually wrote this in a birthday card - the assumption that it COULD be wrong was a bit of a non-starter.

Sounds like me..I seem to fall for the high IQ men who enjoy what I like to do, which of course means they have to be androgyne, since creative, high IQ people usually are.
Being androgynous, they usually also have some problematic traits as well.
