I think as social creatures it is very hard to go against the group for many. Groups form doctrine. There are always straws that break the camels back, the doctrine no longer makes sense, and they either leave the group or the group rejects them. Human nature.

That there is a non-physical world we are yet to sense, where everything is possible but so is nothing (stole that one off of Buddha ).
