I don’t get the number of atheists who think being a “conservative” is a positive thing!?
What part of conservatism appeals to you!? I don’t get it…..🤷🏻‍♂️

The great thing about the wholly Babble and Christianity as a whole is that anyone can find a spiritual reason to believe anything you want to.

The Liberal first commandment is Love one another
The Conservative first commandment is God helps him who helps himself and God help him who I find helping himself from me!

I once heard a Thatcherite Conservative Christian say his favourite quote by Jesus was
"Take up thy bed and walk" because it meant Jesus (A self employed small business man) was telling the crippled man to stop relying on charity and to go out and "Get a Job"

To conserve is to keep things the way they are. No progress. No change. So the status quo remains and no one has to adjust to change. As if change can be avoided. So to me they are delusional.

Change is the only “constant” in the universe…..🤷🏻‍♂️

I really don't even understand what "conservative values" are. History indicates that they value racism and bigotry, hatred, using the government to hurt/punish those people they don't like, more freedom for themselves but less freedom for others, white supremacy, and violence. I don't see any of these things as "values".

Bingo…..that’s all I see as well!?🤠

I think that it is just the value of rarity, most atheists especially in the U.S. are on the liberal left politically. So that if they are not, they feel that to be exceptional, and perhaps they feel the need to counter the natural assumptions that they are left because they are atheists.

It is quite different here in the U. K., where many people are, at least nominally, atheist, so that you would not generally make any assumptions about their politics or social ideals from that.

If,

"Conservatism is a cultural, social, and political philosophy and ideology, which seeks to promote and preserve traditional institutions, customs, and values. The central tenets of conservatism may vary in relation to the culture and civilization in which it appears. In Western culture, depending on the particular nation, conservatives seek to promote a range of institutions, such as the nuclear family, organized religion, the military, the nation-state, property rights, rule of law, aristocracy, and monarchy. Conservatives tend to favour institutions and practices that enhance social order and historical continuity."

then it's hard to argue against motherhood.

Despite being well to the left of democratic socialism I'd prefer decisions to be based on impartial assessments of individual policies.

I have a very conservative stance on allowing any organisations to enjoy tax loopholes., ie remove them and collect an equitable share of taxation revenue.

Words mean nothing without context and action fulfilling democratically agreed stances.

Belief in cultural icons ie. imaginary beings and magic, and political leanings are not necessarily correlated.

I doubt their claims at being an atheist, frankly. A classical philosophical conservative, which I've never been, might just convince me of their conservative credentials since they are supposed to believe in institutions, the rule of law, and so on, but these modern hare- brained crazy right wing lunatics who call themselves 'conservative' share nothing with classical conservatism, or anything to do with reason or the rule law, and are nothing more than authoritarians hiding behind conservatism. The so called conservative atheists on this site do not seem to have a brain cell between them and fit precisely into that mould of far right wing reactionaries.

They like the part that excludes other people from things because they think it means more for them. I saw some research once about conservatism as a form of Attachment Disorder formed in childhood out of unfounded insecurity. Everywhere I go, conservative atheists are far outnumbered by liberal/progressive atheists and also, I've yet to meet one who wasn't at least a part time asshole.

Neither do I.
