It may very well have been something like this that got me thinking when I was 11 or 12 yo church was a bunch of bullshit. My parents always watched the nightly news and while I don't remember paying that much attention the 'background' noise of my parents comments while watching may have been my catalyst to start questioning a God and the whole church thing.
