What are your thoughts on vigilantism? In El Salvador, for instance, groups have been formed to exterminate members of the gang MS 13 because the police cannot give citizens the protection needed. People who have their own businesses must pay this gang a monthly fee to stay in business or not be killed. They are in many respects like Mafia bullies. You know it's a desperate situation when you have to fight crime with crime!

@DarwinistOne

For a human life to qualify for death, its mere existence has to be a net negative in worth. In emergencies, the people of higher value are more sensibly important than people of lower value. That's all I will say, because I don't necessarily hold anything bad against gangs, especially gangs that are as dangerous as MS-13.

This is self defense. It is a civil war. With the civil people doing what they must to protect themselves. Too bad so many of the "police" everywhere are part of the problem.

I say you do what needs to be done for your survival from valid threats. There can be a fine line with something like this though. You need checks and balances with everything.

It has its place in society ?

Becareful what you ask for, cia formed vigilantes in colombia to exterminate certain cartels. Dont be that naive. You want to feed the nra now?

Well, how's about we just sell them guns?

@bigpawbullets This isn't 1968.

@GipsyOfNewSpain
True.... but some things never change.

@bigpawbullets yep.

With all these multi billionaires in the world I'm really disappointed not one of them has become Batman !!!

It is dangerous because when will it happen that these vigilantes decide MS13 is not the only group they go after and they start making their own rules as to who will not be sanctioned by their methods. Power corrupts.

Ugh. As always, things are complicated. The El Salvador situation is way different than George Zimmerman following Trayvon Martin to "protect" his neighborhood.

We tend to glamorize it. But I do love the Magnificent 7.

It is a remake of Kirasawa's "the seven samurais"

You're right, it's complicated. There are, imo, no universal truths or fixes for situations like this. We cannot judge this in the same way a person living there would.

I tried it once, but eating only vegetables just wasn't for me.

I can imagine the CIA are up to their necks in El Salvador. Regarding this gang, they sound like the Mafia by their parasitic nature.

I'm lucky I don't live there. I hope there is justice.

@ABSykes

Ah! Thank you. My suspicion was proven correct.

It all depends on the situation. El Salvador 's people seem to be taking the right course since the police will not. It is a horrible condition going on.

Nothing new about that. The line just keeps shifting.

Kind of like Guardian Angels who rode the subways of NY and Boston fighting crime.

Protection rackets have been around for a loooong time, usually abetted by a corrupt police force. I could see myself resisting this kind of systematic terrorization, but I haven't seen anything about how effective vigilante justice is in the long run. It's probably beyond the means of the victims to relocate and besides, where would they go? I've got no suggestions, but if I was on the short end of a shakedown operation, I'd probably try to fight, but how can I know that? Tough question.

Widespread vigilantism is the result of a lack of local security. It's basically self-defense with proactive effort. I see nothing wrong with it.

Fighting for what's right is never wrong. The American Revolution was just a bunch of vigilantes who organized.

I am fine with it but it still comes down to who watches the Watchmen?
