The Bible - I find the lack of respect people in this room give to the Bible disturbing. Its early mans attempt to make sense of life, and it offers so much good advice. I am an atheist but I respect the Bible.
Here's a quote from the Bible - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails... ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a [NIV]
How can you be against that?
Of course there is alot of BS in the Bible, but there is good advice also. The book is deeply rooted in our culture and has given many comfort. Life can be cold and cruel, and if the Bible helps people deal with their pain it does deserve respect.
There are many good books that have been banned for the sake of a single sentence or paragraph, books that are great literature and the bible by comparison is a homicidal, genocidal, misogynistic and barbaric train wreck of a cobbled together collection of myths and fables. The bible does not deserve respect as a literary work or as a moral guidebook. That our western culture is deeply rooted in this book is no defense of it, our culture was deeply rooted in slavery until a little over a century ago, should slavery be respected? Your position that the bible is full of comforting lies that give people false comfort is equally indefensible as it does more harm than good and in fact encourages people to put off living today for an imaginary heaven that will never come. It robs people of their real life, the only one they can be proven to have for the sake of a pipe dream. No sir, this book of yours does not deserve respect, it shouldn't be burned but it should be kept as an example of deceit and superstition and ignorance, to be a warning against such beliefs.
@Surfpirate
"... it does more harm than good..."
Is that a scientific fact, or just a belief you hold?
@skado Historic observation, everywhere that religion has gone in the world it has brought pain and suffering and death. The observations bear out the hypothesis.
@Surfpirate
Are you saying it has never brought comfort to anyone or helped them constrain their destructive potential?
@skado I'm sure Hitler liked kittens and rainbows as well, doesn't change what he was or bring back the millions that died because of him. In comparison with the bible and the church, Hitler was a rank amateur.
@Surfpirate
The wars are pretty visible and to some extent quantifiable, at least in approximate number dead, but it's hard to see how the other side would ever be quantifiable... how many individuals in, say the last two thousand years for example, didn't commit a crime or murder someone because of religious conviction or fear of Hell? How much general angst has been removed from society at large over the years because countless individuals found solace in their faith? 80% of the world population claims some degree of religious faith. How do you claim to know what life would be like on this planet if that comfort was suddenly taken away from all those otherwise silent and generally well behaved individuals? Seems impossible to know for sure. Also seems totally unlikely to me that wars would suddenly end after religion was removed from the equation. Then what would we blame it on?
@gater I said that the bible shouldn't be burnt but instead kept as a warning to future generations. Did someone else suggest a book burning? That's a terrible idea.
@gater, @skado So did I just hear you correctly? Did you just say that the oppression of religious dogma has kept people from committing crimes they might otherwise have committed out of fear of hellfire and damnation and you think this is a good thing? Furthermore, did you just say that the empty comfort people derived from this massive lie against human potential and growth as a species is also a good thing?
I would suggest that freedom and democracy came about in spite of religion and that the power of kings and other despots is legitimized by religion. One has to wonder how much humans might have advanced as a species without the oppression of religious dogma. Religion is not a positive force in society, it has been shown that Atheists are at least as moral as Theists and they do so without the fear of a sky daddy raining down hellfire on them it they don't act morally. How can Theists even claim to have the moral high ground when they have to be coerced by threat of eternal damnation to behave in a civilized manner?
@Surfpirate You seem to equate religion with the Bible - the Bible is just a book - a religion is how they interpret it. Some were/are good - some bad.
@Surfpirate
No, if you’re interested, you can go back and see there is a difference between what I said and your interpretation of it.
@gater the book is the instruction manual for the religion, you can interpret it anyway you want but it is still the same toxic message
I think you might be in the wrong group. The bible is a work of fiction written by people to control others. It has caused more death and damage than you can imagine.
And comforted more than you can imagine.
Perhaps not against that carefully selected quote but overall the book is abhorrent and deserves nothing but contempt.
We're tired of people trying to pass laws with it. Of course we're gonna disrespect it.
@michaelinlivonia exactly
"People who take their faith a la carte and cafeteria style don't impress me very much on the points of principal and conviction that we're supposed to be talking about."
— Christopher Hitchens
You can't pick and choose only the good parts, [like a cafeteria / a-la cart menu] and disregard the rest.
Also, please enjoy this link to a website, that interactively displays all the contradictions in the bible, there are many...
[bibviz.com]
What prevents someone from choosing only the good parts?
@skado If you mean by interacting with the website I posted, I can help.
An example I hear from Christians, is that god didn't create evil, that is man's fault, his original sin.
On this link, it indicates, a few vs. how in scripture, god did create evil in several passages. and then it later shows the contradicting posts
[bibviz.com]
@MarcusMethod
No, I wasn't talking about the website. I was talking about the Bible. You say you can't choose only the good parts. What prevents someone from doing that? I've done it all my life, and nothing has stopped me so far.
@skado You're right, nothing is stopping you from selectively picking only the good parts of the bible and claiming that those are nice pieces of advice or endearing passages. The entire bible is claimed to be the infallible word of god, NOT just the good parts you favour. And as demonstrated by the link provided, the book in contradictory. It says one piece of good advice, then contradicts itself.
I'm also not superstitious.
@MarcusMethod
You had me at "You're right"
The Bible isn't claimed to be the infallible word of God by me. Why should I care if it is contradictory?
@skado A lot of Christians would tell you different that the bible IS infallible. And again, if YOU interpret it that way, or however, then I am not stopping you at all. You have every right to believe in what you want, as do I and have illustrated the facts. Best part about facts is that they don't care if you believe in them or not.
@SallyMc
I said "What prevents someone from choosing only the good parts?"
You said "Integrity".
I'm asking you why do you feel I should exercise such integrity in my dealings with a book you think is not to be respected at all? If you can throw the whole thing out, why can't I throw parts of it out?
@MarcusMethod
Well we agree about that. I’d even go further and say facts don’t even care if you know them or not . So would it be fair to say that your beef is more with Christians who think you have to take the entire book literally, than with those who find comfort and strength in some of its metaphors and don’t worry about the parts they don’t find useful?
@skado My concern is with those who feel because the bible has some ‘nice’ endearing quotes, that is what establishes the whole book as truth.
With so many contradictions in the bible, it’s hard to have it as a substantial moral compass in todays day and age of ‘what we know now.’
I’ll leave this with you; Even Richard Dawkins said himself [paraphrasing] “the bible is important piece of literature to read, to know how people use to think, philosophize. To not know of it, or it’s teaching would make you unable to communicate with lots of people when they reference it.”
And again, yes, no one is stopping you from JUST focusing on the nice things in a book full of horrid tales. Put your blinders up whenever you want, cherry pick till your hearts content, I’m not stopping or preventing you.
Hope that clears things up.
@MarcusMethod
Thanks for not stopping me.
@skado because thats the whole point if demanding we "respect" that book. It has been used to enslave and disenfranchise millions. It is book by and for enemies of reason. I will not respect it and I will scream and kick about any tone deaf, blind follower that demands I do so.
Hi, @Blindbird
I haven't seen yet where he demanded anyone respect anything; only that he found it disturbing that they didn't. He's allowed his sentiments, isn't he? He's also pretty clearly not a blind follower; he has identified himself as an atheist.
@skadoA] I doubt his truthfulness and B] expressing dismay at a lack of respect is a passive demand for respect.

90. To whom did the Midianites sell Joseph?
To the Ishmaelites (Genesis 37:28)
To Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh (Genesis 37:36)
91. Who brought Joseph to Egypt?
The Ishmaelites bought Joseph and then took Joseph to Egypt (Genesis 37:28)
The Midianites had sold him in Egypt (Genesis 37:36)
Joseph said to his brothers I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt (Genesis 45:4)
92. Does God change his mind?
Yes. The word of the Lord came to Samuel: I repent that I have made Saul King... (I Samuel 15:10 to 11)
No. God will not lie or repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent (I Samuel 15:29)
Yes. And the Lord repented that he had made Saul King over Israel (I Samuel 15:35). Notice that the above three quotes are all from the same chapter of the same book! In addition, the Bible shows that God repented on several other occasions:
i. The Lord was sorry that he made man (Genesis 6:6)
I am sorry that I have made them (Genesis 6:7)
ii. And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do to his people (Exodus 32:14).
iii. (Lots of other such references).
Moses and Aaron converted all the available water into blood (Exodus 7:20-21)
The magicians did the same (Exodus 7:22). This is impossible, since there would have been no water left to convert into blood.
94. Who killed Goliath?
David (I Samuel 17:23, 50)
Elhanan (2 Samuel 21:19)
95. Who killed Saul?
Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.... Thus Saul died... (I Samuel 31:4-6)
An Amalekite slew him (2 Samuel 1:1- 16)
96. Does every man sin?
Yes. There is no man who does not sin (I Kings 8:46; see also 2 Chronicles 6:36; Proverbs 20:9; Ecclesiastes 7:20; and I John 1:810)
No. True Christians cannot possibly sin, because they are the children of God. Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God.. (I John 5:1). We should be called children of God; and so we are (I John 3: 1). He who loves is born of God (I John 4:7). No one born of God commits sin; for Gods nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God (I John 3:9). But, then again, Yes! If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (I John 1:8)
97. Who will bear whose burden?
Bear one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2)
Each man will have to bear his own load (Galatians 6:5)
98. How many disciples did Jesus appear to after his resurrection?
Twelve (I Corinthians 15:5)
Eleven (Matthew 27:3-5 and Acts 1:9-26, see also Matthew 28:16; Mark 16:14 footnote; Luke 24:9; Luke 24:3 3)
99. Where was Jesus three days after his baptism?
After his baptism, the spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days ... (Mark 1:12-13)
Next day after the baptism, Jesus selected two disciples. Second day: Jesus went to Galilee - two more disciples. Third day: Jesus was at a wedding feast in Cana in Galilee (see John 1:35; 1:43; 2:1-11)
100. Was baby Jesus life threatened in Jerusalem?
Yes, so Joseph fled with him to Egypt and stayed there until Herod died (Matthew 2:13 23)
No. The family fled nowhere. They calmly presented the child at the Jerusalem temple according to the Jewish customs and returned to Galilee (Luke 2:21-40)
101. When Jesus walked on water how did the disciples respond?
They worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God (Matthew 14:33)
They were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened (Mark 6:51-52)
"Slaves, obey your masters". That's in the Bible, too.
The bible is poorly written, scientifically inaccurate, inconsistent, full of hate and fear-mongering, and its sole purpose is to manipulate and control the masses. How could you NOT be against that???
A broken clock is right twice a day.
But it is still makes it useless at best, dangerously misleading at worst.
Certainly, a stopped clock is not worth studying, nor deserving of respect, much less of worship, especially since it is used to control and exploit people and to prevent them from becoming ethically informed.
Every once in a while,a diamond ring ends up in the trash. However, if you want a diamond ring, your best bet is to save your money and buy one at a jewelery store instead of going to dig in a dump.
King James Bible, Luke 14:26
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
I'm not against that verse. But there are plenty of verses that are complete garbage.
And some are downright dangerous.
Like all other literature, the Bible was a book (or series of books) of its time. It did attempt to make sense of life, but it also justified horrific acts and was simply wrong in some places.
It'd be like respecting the Aztecs for their human sacrifices. Sure, they tried to make sense of the world by giving blood to their gods, but I don't have to like what they did.
I am a little confused. You are an athiest but you are quoting the bible to defend the bible. Your quotes in defense of the book are very selective.
Tiny amounts on acceptable platitudes compared to thousands of abhorrent statements does not earn my respect. My mother claims my father was a good man because he never beat up my disabled sister, totally disregarding the fact that he crippled and scarred me, beat her senseless and tortured our pets. Not convinced.
You don't seem to know much about the Bible if you are defending it. I hope you read the verses the others are posting since they beat me to it.
@michaelinlivonia Hmm..perhaps I need to use the "block" button again. I usually block all people I wouldn't care to meet in person due to misogyny or anger issues anyway, and of course ALL alt-right people.
Not saying there are not some good bits there bud (song of songs is one of mine) but so has the Odyssey. That doesnt mean we can't enjoy "Oh brother where art tho"
Plus the most important love that book teaches is love of god. Its the 1st commandment and the 1st golden rule. Now given that most people here think that there is no god to love. Thats not gonna be a place to find respect.
Secondly if there was hypothetically a god to love. Most people here would sign a petition to put him before the courts in the Hague for crimes against humanity.
Not to mention all the talking snakes, burning bushes, water into wine magic show bunkum and that old respect glass is looking quite empty.
Then you have the treatment of women in both the OT and NT. plus gays.
Then the killer is that Christianity is BS. Nice idea but like communism, its unworkable. You turn the other cheek ( how many believers would actually do this?) and your giving rights to someone who does not deserve them. You love your neighbor as yourself and your gonna get stomped on, give away all your possessions leaving you destitute and/or be an emotional wreck within short order.
I can be against it because it's nothing but fiction. Poorly written fiction, at that.
It has plagiarized and cannibalized every ancient text that came before it.
It's been rewritten numerous times, and always to reflect the agendas of those doing the financing. It condatricts itself repeatedly.
It's full of hypocrisy, misogyny, slavery, murder, rape, and other acts of violence. The god of the bible is a genocidal extortionist with severe anger issues. Certainly not worthy of worship.
Yeah, the bible is a waste of paper. It's a shame trees have to die just to print that garbage.
@Faithless1 First off, you expressed your opinion, and so did I. My comment was not a "knee-jerk" reaction, and there is no way I'll be "pulling back" from it. I have studied the history of the bible, my opinions are rooted in my research. Plus, I've actually read the damned thing.
You don't have to agree with my opinion, but you don't get to tell me to change it. I disagreed with yours without doing that.
I think the bible is an unmitigated load of bullshit. It doesn't matter if there are any "pretty" passages, the majority of it is ugly, and it's been used to control and demean.There's nothing there for me to admire. I feel nothing but derision for it's contents and contempt for it's author's.
@Faithless1 I didn't say you made tha original post. I expressed my utter disdain for a book that has been used to harm billions. It doesn't require justification. My blood pressure is just fine, thank you.
I believe that we are all Homosapiens sharing this world and this existence in this time period.. the odds of that are extremely.. I can't even fathom.. but because I can't fathom something I will not make assumptions.. but if I may ask..
Are you a Biblical Scholar? (I am not) If you are a Biblical Scholar, are you secular, Christian, Jew, Muslim? If you were a Christian biblical scholar, did your employer or grant or contract stipulate that you have to sign a contract of faith?
Have you studied the actual historicity of the bible and how it came to be?.. Which version do you speak of.. NIV, King James.. etc.. (you can Google the rest)..
We don't have "a lack of respect" we have informed questions on the validity of said book. We don't criticize people.. we will/ do criticize bad ideas.. and the bible is chalk full of them...
It condones slavery as an example.. do you condone slavery? Exodus 21: 20-21.. and if you want to play the "that's the old testament card then read..Ephesians 6:5..
Yeah fellow Homosapiens are deserving of respect.. not bad literature.
yes - ive spent thousands of hours studying the Bible - although now im an atheist, I still respect the book, the history behind it, the advice it gives, knowing that it has helped so many. And when I read some the comments about the Bible I am just shocked by the stupidity and lack of respect by some of the people in this room.
@gater I am in agreement with you about the concept of respect,. I am curious, interested, skeptical, and willing to learn more..
I wish I could take you at your word that you have "spent thousands of hours studying the Bible"... But I'm skeptical..
.. ideas, books don't warrant respect..
@gater
I accept and respect Religion
How could I not. They are like 80℅ of the world's population.
The most major problem I have for Religion is they don't accept me. I have harmed nobody in my life and will not live a lie.
It’s surprising that you didn’t use Two Corinthians here...
You do not need the bible to learn the value of love furthermore, the bible is one of my attempts to make sense of the world around us. There are hundreds of religions older than Christianity. Why don't you show any deference towards them ? Or give them any credit for their philosophical contributions?The ancient Greeks contributed more to our society than Christianity
The book of fairy tales (aka bible) was written by a bunch of old white drunken monks who also were busy brewing beer in monasteries from one hundred till fifteen hundred or so after 0. (No, I never say AC) I stopped reading religious or folkloric fairy tales at age 10 when common sense took over.
