LINK Brazil is letting the coronavirus run wild with little intervention, and the results are strikingly bad

Brazil, which has a population of more than 209 million, has reported more than 91,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and at least 6,300 deaths from the virus.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the virus for weeks and even encouraged protesters calling for state-issued lockdowns to be lifted.

The country has yet to hit its peak in COVID-19 cases, and experts worry that the case count and death toll could be much higher than reported.

They’re just doing what we’re doing here and that’s letting nature take its course through the elderly, the sick and the poor.
We’re just better at hiding it.
Just saying look at who’s been hit the hardest and who’s received the best equipment and care?

1

Bolsonaro and Trump must be related. If not he must be related to Stephen Miller who writes most of Trump's speeches.

1

A different perpective:

  1. You in USA are not in lock down, you are in social distancing in US.
You are allowed to go protesting outside, in the real lockdown like Italy and Spain, you would be arrested or have a large fine if you did it. In china they would barricade your dor from outside, this is lock down.
So what she says is that voluntary social distance works as much as the lock down... She is just giving 2 names for the same thing, of course they will have same level of effectiveness.

  2. No one never told that

3)Short term, correct most of humans will develop resistance. BUT long term... we don't know yet. Human Corona in general leaves high resistance for some time until it mutates enough, so this corona is too young to know if there will be a long term resistance after the first infection.

  1. Face mask is a strategy, the orientation in the beginning was to the public health services to stockpile medical supplies, and the masks on the public while the infection is small is simply wasted, when could be used for healthcare. Once there is community spread, then masks are effective. We need to remember that we as a world do not have unlimited industrial capacity to produce those things so yes they are effective, but we can't waste in places it won't make big effect

5)The sentence can be interpreted in many forms and shapes so one can distort it in anyway to fit the narrative.

GOOD FOR THEM.... Sweden is succeeding without this lockdown tyranny. Lockdowns have only made the contagion worse. There is NO WAY to stop this virus. NONE. The lockdowns have only prolonged the spread. The virus WILL KILL all that it will. It will only take longer.

Flattening the curve increases the length of the disease's cycle. It will take much longer for the virus to cease killing a few more than the 40,000 the FLU kills each year in the US alone.

The more data we have the clearer it is that these actions taken by governments were way over the top.

An estimated 200 MILLION will die as the result of these clearly insane responses to what is increasingly clear no worse than the yearly flu deaths. Other diseases, Famine, loss of income, businesses lost, years of worldwide depression,... The cure will kill millions more than the virus will. AND IT WILL>

In the US, the anti-constitutional restrictions, by mostly leftest governors, will result in repeating this insanity every time some idiot cries wolf. They have damaged our society for decades.

I think you should volunteer to work in a hospital. They need your clear no nonsense way of thinking. You could do wonders cleaning bed pans and helping with intubations. And should you have the misfortune of becoming ill with the virus, I hope the doctors adopt your way of thinking. It would be foolish to try to help you. After all, the virus will kill all that it will. Helping someone like you would only prolong the spread. Were you born without compassion or did you have it surgically removed?

Everything you just wrote is utterly ridiculous. Sweden is definitely not "succeeding" unless succeeding means killing your citizens. As of now (using current confirmed cases and deaths) 12% of people in Sweden who get COVID-19 die, but in the US it's only 6%

Social distancing and self-isolation prevents the virus from spreading. If people aren't around each other then the virus can't go from person to person. It can't spread. Fewer people who get the virus = fewer people who die from the virus.

If you are worried about famine, loss of income, and depression then maybe that means our capitalist government isn't perfect and needs to adapt. Give people universal basic incomes and universal health care (including access to mental health care)

In my opinion, Jacar, you ARE just what this world needs right now, another dip-shit arse-wipe.

@Triphid The fact that all you can come up with as a response is a personal insult tells me you have no actual logical response to @joeymf86. If you have a rational response, make it. If all you can do is call names, go back to 6th grade where you learned that dip-shit ass-wipe technique.

@citronella My comment was intende for Jacar, notjoeymf86 btw.
And may one wish you a most Happy Mothers Day for this coming Sunday as well, citronella.

@joeymf86 My apologies if you thought my comment was meant for you, joeymf86, it WAS meant soley for Jacar.
An error, should you care to look, I have since amended.

Define success in this case.
They have more cases and more cases/pop than the other nordics that have the same level of healthcare/culture/population age etc.
They have more deaths/pop than USA

Norway where I live started social distancing right in the beginning and now it is opening again as the cases are well below the critical point and not increasing (plus no hospital was even full during crisis, even in small places).

@Triphid No worries. I didn't see your comment until now (after you edited it). 🙂
@citronella Thanks for the back up 🙂

Ummmm Sweden’s population density is almost equal to Alaska or Maine whereas Brazil’s is more like Los AngelesNYC, Atlanta combined.
Brazil’s eliminating the favelas for development and their letting Covid-19 do the job for them.

2

I feel very sorry for my people in Brazil for being blind on the deathly Bolsonaro politic.
I saw this documentary that shows who is really taking care of the poor people in the favelas.

3

It is a deep sadness 😟

6

You have a mirror image of Bolsonaro in the WH, Brazil can expect as rampant an infection rate as the US is experiencing, fools with power fool with power!

3

It is God's will that the God Swill that is Jair Bolsonaro send the citizens of his country to their early deaths and thence to Heaven to sing everlasting praises to the genocidal maniac that is the Biblical God! [en.wikipedia.org]

6

Well, of course. Bolsonaro is a far right wing individual that supports neo-liberal policies that could not care less about people and Instead focus on economic growth without concern for a widening income disparity or the plight of the poor. Most likely, the large majority of the victims are the poor and sick malnourish sectors with chronic illnesses, while the higher income people have good information, economic means to support quarantines, and access to medical services.

Sounds like someone I know.

@Paul4747 Exactly. And most likely Bolsonaro won’t take responsibility either.

tbh he is not neoliberal, he is just populist and used the liberal speech to gather votes. His actions in the parliament were always in direction of big state (mostly acting as Representative of military union).

He is just a populist idiot that is holding now only because the conservative (or even reactionary) base of radicals that only receive fake news via whatsapp will never read the real news. They even believe that death total is going down (even if all hospitals are full and even funeral services are overloaded)

3

So far, they are doing a whole lot better than the USA.

BD66 Level 8 May 7, 2020

ALL other countries are doing better than the U.S. ALL.

Depending on the numbers you look at. Raw numbers, yes. Death rate, no. Infection rate, no.

Brazil now has the highest coronavirus infection rate in the world. And Bolsonaro fired his health minister when he protested reopening the economy and loosening the social distancing guidelines. (Think of it as "Trump dismissing Fauci because he disagreed over reopening the nation on Easter".) Besides this, the government has basically no influence in the favelas, where the gangs are in control. So the infection rate is going nowhere but up.

In America, our daily new cases are finally going down somewhat. Brazil's are going up like a bottle rocket.

No Brazil is not.
The numbers are deceiving, there are no tests, basically Brazil is just blind, to be able to compare the numbers Brazil must increase the test rate to the point of 300k tests/day (we did 300k tests in total so far...).

I know whole families with symptoms and no tests so far...

The north region so far is the worse, there are no coffins anymore, they are using planes and military trucks to transport it.

5

Bolsonaro is a joke and a Trump wannabe.

Yes, he is. Is that not the most pathetic thing ever?

2

Coronavirus? Is that what they're calling abject poverty brought on by socialism, these days?

It's not that Brazil is "letting" covid "run wild". It's that even the most basic medical precautions, soap, indoor plumbing, clean water, are absolute luxuries there.

Brazil also has staggeringly high volumes of death from things like influenza, h1n1 and swine flu.

Brazil has a 1.01 in 100,000 mortality rate for the flu.

Proper context kills spin doctoring.

SCal Level 7 May 6, 2020

It’s not socialism as we were taught it in Sociology: [quora.com]

@girlwithsmiles I mean, technically you are correct. Brazil is actually a communist, military dictatorship. Up until last year the government espoused its military and presidential dictatorship as "socialist". What we know for certain is that free market Capitalism is not the state sanctioned economic system; and thus, abject poverty is rightfully to be expected. Which makes any comparison to the US instantly laughable.

Brazil is the B in the BRICS coalition of countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa; and their political systems are right in line with the aforementioned.

So you're saying socialism is causing abject poverty, which is causing Coronavirus among other things?
Is this your scientific opinion?
When are people going to stop confusing authoritarian communist top-down command economies with democratic socialism?
It amounts to an abuse of language to make an illegitimate political point.

@Storm1752 Is that how you reconciled that infornation I just gave? If those are the conclusions you arrived at, then that is just already what you wanted to see.

Democratic socialism is a made up term to put lip stick on two ugly pigs. Democracy: mob rule dictatorship of the majority. Socialism: you don't own that, the mob/govt/dictator owns owns that and you!

Nothing illegitimate or confused here.

Perhaps you could point out a successful use of "democratic socialism" that can be model for prosperity for us confused folks? Im sure you will make the same tired arguments most uninformed academics make. But I will read it.

@LimitedLight that was really interesting. So no where near communist, he’s strongly religious and it reflects in his very controlling views on how people’s human rights should be managed.

@BryanLV unfortunately there is plenty of poverty in the Uk too. I think you’re giving too much weight to the economy. A simple change in the benefits of unemployment has led to a lot more hardship and homelessness of the poor. (I know someone who would have been one of the homeless; if their family hadn’t of bailed them out...twice! Being on regular benefits would have been a safer option than working their 0 hour contract jobs!)

Whether you vote or not isn’t so important, either way you’re at the mercy of those in charge.

There are Countries where dictators and elected politicians have made bad or good choices/ been hated or loved.
I think most people know what they would like, but less than 50% get it.

@girlwithsmiles The economies of the UK and Brazil are in no way comparable. I would suggest you sit down and listen, not talk, to people from the poorest regions of Brazil, Columbia, etc.

The fact that you're even attempting to compare the two shows how far out of touch you are. Not trying to insult you. Just trying to add some much needed perspective to the dialogue in these echo chambers.

You may be at the mercy of people who call themselves govt, but I don't even pay attention to them for the most part. It just speaks to the differences in our mindsets.

I will just leave it there.

@LimitedLight Brazil has been a brutal military dictatorahip for most of the last cenrury. Socialism simply means that govt controls the land, property and resources. Which is still the case in Brazil.

I assure you the new communist dictator and a wiki article have not changed these facts.

The people in areas such as the Favelas are dirt poor. Govt controls, restricts and rations all resources coming in and out of such regions. It's much more mafia style rule than anything else. They execute people in the streets. Talk to someone who is from these regions. I do. I have also traveled to these regions.

It really doesn't seem like you know what you're talking about. Please peruse this very recent article from a reputable source.

[hrw.org]

@LimitedLight Great way to type a lot and say absolutely nothing.

@BryanLV I will also leave it there. One of my very good friends is Colombian, I can hardly get a word in edgewise with her, as much as I adore her.
I was enjoying the learning. Interesting to hear your views.
P.s. your flu death rates noted are the international norm too.

@LimitedLight ? Was that meant for me? My comments were directed to BryanLV. They’re not related to your discussion with him 😉

3

Well, Sweden doesn't have much of lock downs either and people are dying but they do have a plan.

@ToolGuy Yes, so they do. I wonder where it will all lead to. Huge proportion of Swedes that die from corona virus are people in nursing homes and also people from African and Middle Eastern backgrounds.

4

Crazy right wing president.

much like ours

@whiskywoman sadly true.

1

Bolsonaro is another POS in power. some of his constituents even believe, like some of Trump's, that he was sent by their god-thing.

6

Well, that sounds disturbingly familiar.

2

Brazil will achieve herd immunity quickly. It will surprise me if, in the long run, Brazil's death rate percentage as higher than average.

Herd immunity is "achieved" while people die of falls, heart attacks, diabetic coma, car accidents etc etc etc, all prblems/injuries that Could have been treated if the hospitals were not overwhelmed. So you are Not looking at the big picture.

@AnneWimsey Incorrect. I am.

You're making the huge assumption that, once infected and recovered from COVID-19, humans develop a long-term immunity. As far as I know, that hasn't been determined yet. I feel like that would have been pretty big news if we'd discovered that.

And there's no "herd immunity" to flu, or to common cold. They just don't kill as many people. Why would this disease be so different?

@Paul4747 I make no such assumption.
The lockdowns and their devastation of economies will cause more death and suffering than will the pandemic.

@PBuck0145 And there's a second assumption. If you want, instead call them "unproven predictions".

So far the known death toll worldwide from the coronavirus is over 1/4 million. That's only the cases with a known diagnosis, it's certain there are others whoo never went to a doctor or never got a test before dying. You're predicting over 1/4 million deaths due to an economic downturn? How exactly do you figure?

@Paul4747 If, in a year, verified statistics prove my "assumption" to be incorrect, I will issue an apology. In truth, my hope is that I am incorrect.

12

Brazil's president is a huge POS. His policies allow the Amazon rainforest to be cut down and cleared; said the rainforest was in pristine condition when it was actually on fire; and then hilariously blamed environmental groups and Leonardo DiCaprio for the rainforest being on fire.

His views on women are pretty bad too. Maybe even worse than Trump's.
