This is part of the problem. The other part is the self serving weakness of Republicans that know better. They have to stand up to Trump. This is their last chance to get it right.

Sixteen Republican Senators can maybe, just maybe save the soul of the Republican Party, as the “Party of Lincoln”. They can try to cobble together a coalition of conservatives of various hues. There had been talk of this prior to 2016, but Trump blew it out of the water.

If they don’t save their party from Trumpism the rest of us will need to save America from them. It is that simple. If they do save it from Trumpism. We will still have to fight them (no, not literally) to make any progress, but that’s the nature of political discourse and disharmony.
