War is a terrible metaphor for Progress.

Progress does not require War - it only requires Work.

Work for Progress.

We progress but the going is slow and hard, especially for metaphors and rhymes.

ürür, kervan yürür

The dogs (of war?) may bark but the caravan moves on.

Let your elected representatives know what you think.

War is profitable for those who make the weapons of war and the U.S. has a larger military budget than the next nine largest militaries in the world combined. So, war is good for the 1% and its never their sons, daughters, spouses, or siblings that will die on the front lines.

True enough, but not the subject of this post.

Fighting against tyranny and aggression in a war to preserve and protect yourself, your family and your country’s peace and security, can never be construed as wrong or an oxymoron…as this oversimplification implies!

Of course you are right when it comes to actual war, at least defensive war. But this post is not about that and does not “imply” that.

This post is about the terrible habit that we, at least in the U.S., have of naming everything the “War on X”. War on Drugs, War on Poverty, etc., etc. This is bad metaphorical hygiene. Progress is not a war to be won. Those who oppose progress are not enemies to be hated and killed. They are our own human siblings and cousins, with whom we must learn to work.

@skado Of course these phrases have proliferated and in any true meaning of the word ‘war’ they are nonsensical. It was the George Carlin quote that I was referencing in particular, that is just a lazy oxymoron to throw out …he was a comedian as well as a political commentator after all!

@skado The war metaphor, is not in common use in Europe where Marion and I come from, and on the odd occasion where it has been imported, mainly from the USA (Such as the police using. "War on Drugs. ) it has generally been widely mocked and belittled. Resulting in it being dropped quickly. That is perhaps why Marion did not see your point, since it is perhaps a little parochial, for an international site.

@Fernapple
As I suspected, hence my “at least in the U.S.” comment. I’m glad some parts of the world are well beyond the cultural adolescence that the U.S. still suffers.

One of the many things Carlin said for a laugh that makes no fucking sense, but people thought it sounded good and ran with it.

That it makes no sense was his point, and mine.

@skado You misunderstand. His criticism is stupid. You can fight for peace. Do you not agree that fighting against Hitler's army had a goal of peace? Thus, it is not analogous to the absurdity, "screwing for virginity".

@ChestRockfield
And you miss my point entirely.

This post is not about war or peace.
It’s about using war or fighting as a metaphor for things that are NOT war or fighting.

I could delete the humor if that would help.
