Why do we pay twice for the same services, police and military with our tax money?

Would it not be easier to just have the National Guard as our police force and only pay for it once instead of twice?

The police force and the military are very different things. They operate on different sets of rules. It is a VERY bad idea to merge them.

That would be a police state which I would oppose.

The police are becoming increasingly militarized but, that aside, the two institutions are tasked with different missions. The police are there - supposedly - to enforce the law (although, in reality, to protect the interests and property of the wealthy), and the military first and foremost to project US influence abroad (hence the bases scattered across the globe).

I think the best way to look at this would be to weigh the pros and cons.

One of the pros would obviously be a better trained police force.

One of the cons would be the federal government having influence over states by holding back funding or police dispersement if the state doesn't go along with whatever the federal government wants.

Any other pros and cons anyone can think of?

You also have to remember there are more than 1 million police officers all over the U.S. The National Guard only has about 350,000 - 450,000 members.

I am not talking about martial law but trained police that are required to go to training like our military does. The police are no more in contr

control by the people than the government is! Look at the news people are getting shot by the police more than schools are and it only stays in the media for a day or two and then it disappears. SWAT is the same thing as military and is usually ex military so what is the difference?

3

It is important to separate military from local law enforcement. "Posse comitatus" is actually a law that prevents this very thing.

Laws can be changed, the police need to have better training!

1

Because I bieleve it's against the lhe law for military act as law enforcement also!

Time to change the law!

1

From a public finance point of view....If the pentagon can "lose" billions of dollars through "administrative error", and blatantly allow theft through contracts that specify unneeded goods and services for hundreds of times what they actually should cost, I'd prefer to retain at least some local control over how law enforcement monies are collected and allocated here in my town. And make no mistake, this would mean more taxes for you and me and a huge ballooning of the federal deficit and debt. Otherwise, great idea.

That would be a police state. We are paying police due to our socialism and it is a good thing.
Our military, highway, schools etc are all socialist programs and when our nation realizes we must go all the way with socialism we will much better off.

The term is called "Martial Law". It is used by some dicatotorial countries and even here in cases of emergency. [endoftheamericandream.com]

Martial law is when the government forces people into their homes and gives us curfew, not making an actual police force from our military! I'm not talking about tanks on the streets, just police that are trained and in shape!

@IpraiseMYSELF that sounds kind of gay.... but what else can we get from a pussy.

@GipsyOfNewSpain Whatever Obama look alike

@IpraiseMYSELF The National Guard is military and, as such, are not trained to handle civilians. To the military one does as told and no one has rights. The police are trained to know and understand the rights of others. There is a big difference between any military force and the police.

There would either be to many police or not enough and the police lack tanks, planes and a navy.

That's funny because every time I listen to the police they are ranting about not having enough police on the streets and this is their excuse for why they can't do a good job!

1

If you really want to dwell on those things....if you are an employee then your paycheck show how much taxes you have paid, and yet you go out to spend your hard earned money only to find out that for goods and services you have to pay taxes again. If any double booking bothers me then this is it. This is the one I would like to have fixed. Not worry so much about police or armed forces

Nobody worries until they come to screw with your life! Then it's too late.

Your question does not make sense to me.

The police are not good at their job, the military is mostly good at their job, why pay for both when we can just pay the one that gets results?

@IpraiseMYSELF The only societies in which the military takes on the added role of policing are completely authoritarian regimes. The roles MUST be kept separate in ANY democratic society, or we will all lose our civil rights and freedoms. We must deep the roles separate and improve the selection, training, and control of the police.

@wordywalt I understand the past and other results but why can't that change? If everyone thinks the government wants to take away our freedoms so bad then they would have done it already! I don't care how many guns you have the government has tanks, jets, and bombs! I am all for freedom to the people, but where do we draw the line! Real freedom has no limitations and when I wrote a post about that I was made into the enemy! The fact is that the police are abusing rights of the people every time they go to work, so how do we fix the problem?

@IpraiseMYSELF You ignore he truth of the adage that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Your idealism ignores human nature and the results would inevitably be catastrophic.

@wordywalt You have decent rants but no solutions! Why did you ignore the question?

@IpraiseMYSELF I did propose a solution, but you ignored it-- perhaps because it was not what you wanted to hear.

The posse cometatus act. (Sp)

1

Because of the Tenth Amendment. Powers not specifically granted to the federal government are reserved to the states.

I trust the military more than I trust the police!

What happens when the State is out of control?

@IpraiseMYSELF The Enforcement Acts (1870-71) allow the president to call up military forces when state authorities are either unable or unwilling to suppress violence that is in opposition to the constitutional rights of the people. This is the law that allowed Eisenhower to send an army division to Little Rock to enforce desegregation.

Police and Military are Not the same Services. I reckon you never been in law enforcement or in the military. But you already won "The Ignorant Post of the Week Award". And is just Tuesday!

Ha.
Well, that was pretty rude... TRUE, but rude.
Go sit in the corner... or I'll call the police/infantry.
😉

@bigpawbullets lack of Rudeness when call for is what put this country where is today. For me, you gonna need Seals or Swat. I am in one of those Rabid Moods! I don't handle marriage proposals well. Normally I move to another country or at least another state. Right now, I haven't started running yet. Can't stay in the corner for long, I will be found.

Your right police and military are different, the military succeed in their missions and the police do not! Then the police murder innocent people in the street! All we need now is the curfew and we will be in martial law!

You want to talk about ignorant! "I reckon you never been" seems like it tops the charts! LOL I don't think we need seals or swat for you, just the girl scouts!

@GipsyOfNewSpain People like you are why we have to fight for our gun rights today.

@IpraiseMYSELF Hopefully people like me will shove your gun rights up your ass where they trully belong and you won't have to fight anymore.

@IpraiseMYSELF bring them I will return them back pregnant, like your mother.

@GipsyOfNewSpain You look like Obama, and act stupid like him too! LOL

@GipsyOfNewSpain Your right it is time for you to run away or hide in the corner like a coward.

@IpraiseMYSELF people like you are why we need our gun rights amended. Just... wow.

If it's for public services like water treatment, road maintenance, street lights, refuse collection etc.. and they are all starting to cost twice or thrice as much - it's neoliberalism.

It's the ruling class feeding off public money.

It usually manifests as public services being outsourced to private companies, whereas previously it was done in-house.

This usually results in costs going up so the shareholders of these private companies can get rich at the tax payers' expense.

Martial law whoop whoop!

No

5

Super bad idea. The military is not a police force. Two different missions.
It has been tried before with really awful results.

I always thought the National Guard was supposed to protect our borders and not become the National drug running corporation they are today! I understand that the past haunts people's memories, but the police are doing the same thing that everyone is afraid the military would do if they were the police! The only difference is the extra tax money we pay. Honestly the only thing that would change is the uniform and the training.

@IpraiseMYSELF
Well, my experience would indicate, and I believe the examples of trying this in the USA would verify my thought on this.
If someone steals your car, call the police.
If you need a neighborhood or village massacred and burned to the ground, call in the Air Cavalry. We know what we're doing.

2

Even for Hitler and Stalin, using the military as domestic police would have been going too far. 🙂
