Even Marx himself drew a distinction between the two, though he saw socialism as a transitional state between Capitalism and communism.
Most people referring to themselves as socialists today and most of the successful socialist countries are either Social democracies (capitalism subject to checks and balances) or are democratic socialist republics (Capitalist societies with state owned and governed safety nets such as universal health care, welfare for the old and infirm, free education and none military law enforcement.)

Two good examples of shared ownership are Barcelona FC. One of the most successful clubs in Europe owned by the supporters and the John Lewis store chain in the UK, owned by the workers which has survived the lockdown in a healthy state
