The politicization of medical science and the pandemic response will have worrisome consequences.

The seditious and quasi-religious fervor of conspiracy movements in the Trump ever requires us to reassess how society relates to the mental health profession.

Should mental health professionals disclose their political affiliation?

tRumpanzees will seek out sympathizers and never be cured of their delusions.

BTW there is something in the Republican mindset right now that seems very uncaring.
I think that's where many of us get a bit hung up.

It would be one thing to deal with a Dr who has different views for a medical issue - because they're simply diagnosing and treating. (Generally speaking). We don't seem to expect a lot of empathy from medical Doctors these days.

For a Mental Health issue? It's different - we expect and should be able to get true empathy from whoever is treating us.

And to think of an entire group that has trivialized another group extremely for quite some time now - this is a real problem.
It poses an ethical issue.

Both sides are literally at such loggerheads right now? I can't imagine deliberately seeking out a Republican Therapist if you're Democrat or vice versa - it just would be the same echo chamber we find online - where we leave groups because we just don't want to hear that.
The blame game would be ridiculous.

You do have a right to ask questions when looking for a therapist/Dr - feel free to use those questions wisely.

I was kind of surprised by the level of passion in the comments. Though in hindsight I should not have been.

I adjusted the wording of the poll options. Please revote.

I would go with a third option. You have a RIGHT to ask any medical professional you deal with.
Particularly if they care for your mental health.

Back in the day we simply kept those things separate. Religion/Politics/Belief systems? We didn't share what ours were with Clients - we just asked about theirs so we could help them. That is actually the way it's supposed to work.
Professionals are supposed to work within your system of beliefs.

But right now? This could be incredibly problematic.

If you feel there is an issue - you have a right to bring up your concerns - always.
That's always true in the therapeutic relationship.

And they have a right to not answer if they feel you're too intrusive - but you have a right to go elsewhere for treatment. That's the final equation.

Doesn't that amount to basically a boycott of Republican leaning medical professionals?

Why would a boycott be any more effective than laws that Dean Republicans to be not be trained or simply unfit for such professions?

@domos There are also Republicans seeking treatment who might prefer Republican therapists.... so it's a bit of a Catch-22.
As much as there is an "Us Versus Them" mentality happening in the world right now - it honestly shouldn't be impacting a good therapist/client relationship.

Someone who is well trained and keeps those limits the way they are supposed to? The topic shouldn't even come up.

Just like I dealt with clients who were very religious - but I was atheist. It never came up. It didn't need to. I would work within their world views. They didn't need to know what mine were. (As long as I was doing my job well it would never come up). It might mean I had to go do a bit of research to make sure I knew what they were dealing with - but that was about it. Than I'd know what questions I needed to ask.

Only a lousy therapist is going to bring up that they're a Trump supporter right now. Or much of anything else that personal about themselves.

I know it's become more fashionable for therapists to share more about their home lives - etc... and up to a point that can be healthy - to know they have a family - or kids - or they're single. It may make them seem more relatable to your situation.

But sharing what their political views are? No way that should be happening.

It used to be "A thing" that therapist/Psychologists/Psychiatrists were always overseen by someone who did therapy with them. I wish that was something that had continued into this century. Because that oversight? Was incredibly important to prevent bad lines from being drawn. (Things like therapists getting romantically involved with a client).

I'm sure there are programs that still insist on this.
I'm sure there are others that have decided it's unnecessary. (And that's tragic).

It is not a fair poll. Therapists should not be forced to disclose their political affiliation. Professional mental health care therapists should be able to undo said oppression, at least hypothetically. The real problem is that Republicans are unfit to do that work, being fully handicapped by their values, i.e. lack of empathy.

Repuglicans and other fascists should have to reveal their political affiliation because as you say they are "fully handicapped by their values."

I don't think there much difference between therapist disclosing the political affiliation and Republicans being barred from participating in a profession.
