The mob took over control of the biggest Unions, giving the government leverage to harass them. And for a time in the last part of the 20th century, non union companies were offering wage and benefits commensurate with Union shops, just to keep them out. While on the decline for decades, Reagan’s attack on the flight control Union and lack of fellow unionists support and the growing Right to Work laws basically smothered Unions and allowed corporations to move all the money to the top 10% of the corporate ladder, screwing the working middle class big time.
