This year's try to save my gardenia. Last year I put a bucket over it with a glass top and it survived but it never thrived last summer probably due to the stress of the winter.

The location is on the south side of my house so I keep trying. I think I will buy some lava rock to try to keep the ground warmer underneath the tent.

If Oklahoma ever gets a really mild winner I might have gardenias eventually.

Why fight mother nature? Grow natives outdoors. To grow a gardenia, a most sensitive plant, one must mimic greenhouse conditions. Pot it up. Bring it indoors for the winter, to a sunny window, cover it with a vented plastic bag & keep it humid. Next year put the pot & all in the ground so it will be easier to bring indoors the following winter. I kept one alive until I forgot one year. I was in Wisconsin where we used to have winters. Good luck.

You need to vent it, on a sunny winter day it will get too hot under there!

Wrap it with lights over a tarp or blanket. It provides warmth to it. 👍

I am afraid plastic is only going to freezer burn the poor plant. Maybe build a temporary straw bale sided cold frame for it.
As much as I hate July and August weather here, I sure appreciate our zone 9 baby winters!

What about a black rubber tire to hold in heat?

Gardenias like heat and humidity. Perhaps in a container would be better?

That's kind of what I did last year but even though it survived the next spring it never really grew.

@Lorajay Lots of humidity, with indoor heat in the winter it will be a challenge.

I know nothing about gardenias, so I can offer no advice. I wish you all the best. Let us know how it goes. I'd be intersted to know if you have success.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
