Gardening can help you live to be 100.

Well, really, I don't want to live to be 100.

I think its staying active mentally and physically . If I can wake up and look forward to another day I'll take what ever I can get . Gardening is getting harder @ 67 but I don't ever plan on stopping .

I hope the claim is true. Obviously it is no guarantee, but it is a comment on the therapeutic, meditative, and maybe nutritional value of gardening lifestyle. I do know this: My grandmother, a hero of mine, loved gardening, had the most amazing array of hanging fuchsia baskets and peonies and tended a vegetable garden for years. She hung in there with gardening until around age 90 (also was a league bowler until age 85, lol) and lived to be 102 and change. Yay Grandma!!

I will slide in at the "Finish" line and say "Man , what a healthy ride that was" when I'm 100

Very H.S.T. of you!
🙂

I'm with you on that. I've barely hung on to be 60. Almost 61.

I will be 61 in 8 days. That seems to have gotten here very fast!

Gardening is one of my mayor activity !! Obviously the goal is not to reach 100 but to have a good quality life as long as possible.

My goal is to optimize my well being to continue with a high quality of life. My grandmother on mom's side lived to be 98 after her husband passed away a few years earlier. The only thing Is change is improving my quality of life. So far my quality of life at this age is higher. Most people are work are much younger for my job.

Well trying to live longer is my goal

Donto101 Level 7 Dec 28, 2018

I don't care so much for the length, I just want to be healthy and able to do what I want to do.

@HippieChick58 I want to be around for my autistic son as long as possible

I do it because I enjoy growing, eating, and sharing fesh vegetables; but I echo your sentiment.

Try gardening in a northern climate, it will take years off your life expectancy. 😀

I guess I'm halfway there and still going strong. Eventually, the garden will take care of itself and I'll watch the plants fight each other for real estate🙂

Great comment about the "plant fights"! We do that with our habitat garden. It's constantly interesting how the ecosystem rearranges itself and evolves.

@bigpawbullets
You are right! I play referee every year to plants overtaking other plants. It's an eat or be eaten flower garden when age takes its toll on my body.

I've no doubt working in our gardens is good for us. I'm 68.75 years old..... I can work about 2 hours (with breaks) in the yard before I call it done.
At 80? Maybe.... 20 minutes?
At 100??? Maybe walk around in it.

More likely sit in the wheelchair and look at whilst it runs rampant or if you can afford it the illegal Mexican tends it.

You've hit on it - the trick is to modify the amount and type of gardening you do to suit your physical condition - regardless of your age. And - above all else - it should be something you find enjoyable - not a "chore".... IMHO
