The continuing saga of the vanilla - today had my first attempt at hand-pollinating (with a bamboo skewer) on a ricketty ladder on a slope... I'll be extremely surprised if it worked but as I'm going to need to do it every day for a week or two as more flowers open, maybe I'll get there in the end.
This is a great link if anyone's interested in how it's done: [porvenirdesign.com]

How do the flowers pollinate naturally? Must be an incsect or bird not from this atea?

I'm also curious how difficult vanilla orchids are to grow. I have seen them offered for sale from time to time, but never purchased one.

Many orchids are EXTREMLY pollenator specific--like only one species of insect can do it.
