Feral blackberry canes growing in our strawberry beds. Again, I thank the fauna for planting these. I'll move them in the fall to a blackberry patch we're developing out beyond our habitat garden:

I love the whole gardening idea of gently managing the plants that volunteer to grow. Feral berries are a great example. I am planting purchased boysenberries this fall.. very much NOT feral. But in addition, I noticed a lot of dewberry vines popping up through my meadow of a backyard lawn, and so I am letting them grow this year to see what they may produce next year. All the blackberry family produce on second year vines. I recently heard of some hybridized exceptions that will produce late season on first year wood. But that is highly unusual.

What is curious about dewberries, which look just like blackberries but a little smaller, is they don't produce clusters. Each berry grows from its own 2 inch stem growing from the base of its own leaf. They also producer early in the season, supposedly April or May. I figured my back yard to be too shady for blackberries, but since these volunteered, I decided to see what they can do. Maybe they are happy there.

I grew up0 eating blackberry jam and blackberry cobblers made from berries from feral blackberry patches.

Last meal that I had with my daughter & family included freshly picked blackberries gathered in a very pleasant Sunday outing.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
