I have some experience of awarding grade as an A-level marker and CSE grader. In order to understand how the government can cancel exams it is necessary to understand the grading process.

Previously this was very important for those individuals that were too ill to attend exams. Now it will apply to everyone who would have sat the exam. The essential thing required is a list of the examinees IN ORDER of ability. This is easily provided by teachers principally by using the results of internal exams sat by all pupils - notably the 'mock'. That list is being prepared for the exam boards now and ordinarily it would have been sent in before the real exams as a check of the validity of the real exam across the country. Teachers will find no difficulty in currently producing those lists because they know the pupils .

Once the list in order is received then the grade boundary setting can happen and from knowledge of pupil and school plus recommendations from school, the grade is easily made available for each pupil and off they go to University whatever.

The pupils I feel sorry for are those that have not worked or shown their full potential so far. I suggest they bring the teacher an apple

In Scotland we are still working on the problem. In further education, there could be a crash through option during July & August. Although I don't know about SAAS funding or how marking would be done.
I'm due to start at Robert Gordon University in September with a conditional offer. But I need to make the conditions.
We could either just give the places. or do the final exam online as a an open book and just put up with the fact it's an open book this year.
For all we know, the academic year 2020/21 may not even start on time.
Another option would be to strike the year off and restart it once the poo is polished off the fan.
Then there is my job. I could find myself 'conscripted' into the NHS as relief staff. This would get int he way of studies, but then this is an international emergency.

I would have a serious problem. I never did any prep/ homework, partly because I couldn't be bothered and partly because I was too busy showing others how to do it - so in a way I had, but not on paper!
In maths classroom tests I often wrote the answer having solved the problem in my head. When teachers asked how could they give me a mark for my working out, I would point out it was right, so it didn't matter. However, come serious exam time I was invariably in the top 10%. Much the same applied to science, physical geography and languages.
Amusingly, I gained a distinction in English language and failed English literature.
Not a hint of autism in that, is there?

Teachers can look into your 'soul' even though you are behind the bicycle shed. Not accusing you!

@Mcflewster I was frequently to be found having a crafty smoke behind the bike shed!
