BOOGALOO TIME, Something before the Arrival of the Salsa... In 1967 a New York Band Leader named Johnny Colon recorded Boogaloo Blues... the lyrics included the chorus "LSD GOT A HOLD ON ME" and later "1, 2, 3 I FEEL SO FREE". It was a Smash Hit not only in NYC but also in Puerto Rico before the term Salsa was heard anywhere. One of the many rhythms heard back then was the Boogaloo... nothing but a "Hip Cha Cha Cha". When I was a Sophomore in High School I met three of the musicians of the band, they were looking for "Smack"... I took them to my neighborhood and they scored. I wasn't a user but I knew who was who in the hood... They were happy they were not Rip Off. So Me and My buddy got in for free a few days later when they played for my school. In 66 years I had a tone of adventures.... what can I say? Johnny Colon Band was really the first musician that really sung about drugs without hiding it or using obscure words that I remember... in the second song "Oye Ven Aca"... chorus "A Capiar" meant "To Score Drugs". Johnny Colon will Sing... play the Piano and play Trombone in the same song.
