@MsDemeanour well, I don't disagree with you on any of that. I've said here before that the economic rationalist contagion that has ruined Labor goes back to Hawke Keating. Albo might have had a chance had they not wasted years on Shorten. I fear it's too late. Labor is corrupted by the corporate sector and right wing unions. The Right have refashined Australia into a culture of selfish self-interest individualism. The ALP has neither the ideology nor the will to confront it. I am not sanguine about the future. Oddly, I do think Turnbull is a great Labor leader we never had. Had he taken a leaf out of President FDR's book-- from wealth but for popular policies -- he'd have been hugely popular. He couldn't see beyond his class. His period as PM is a nothing now.

@DavidLaDeau well yes, but god is the "creator" so all things created must have a creator, according to that logic. The obvious prick in that religious bubble is, "OK, then who or what created God, and the thing that created that......? etc" God doesn't need a creator, they reply, but the universe does. Religious logic, or rather lack of. Truth is, they just want a big daddy provider in the sky, like a child wants a daddy provider. @Rodatheist Well, I for one would not want to conflate a sense of wonder and awe at nature, the Universe or whatever, with spiritual which means 1. relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things, or 2.relating to religion or religious belief. It helps to take literal definitions rather than fashionable informal ones in such a case as this. The word is over-used and now can mean anything, but I would never use it to mean a sense of wonder, nor would I forget the real religious meaning of the word. I wish others would not as well.

@FrayedBear while I know the significance of those dates, to me 1983 was the turning point. Our labor party, supposedly progressive, abandoned its values, for short term political gain. It is now permanently marginalised - a failure in controlling the centre right, the Hawke Keating dream, and no credibility as a progressive party of the left. It's not the democratic system people have no confidence in, but the political party system. It is twiddle dee and tweedle dum politics. Progressive politics has to lead, inspire, raise consciousness. It's hard but it begins by believing in something and sticking with it. The ALP believes in nothing, except electoralism. And it's a failure at that too.

That might be fine if we lived in a world where all started off equally, if all had the same chances, if all wealth was created by hard work, initiative and entrepreneurial drive, and legally and fairly. But it is *not*. Class, inheritance, rigged systems of capital and governmental rules, grossly unfair taxation on worked rather than investment income, and the 'legal' shonkery of wealth elites through their lawyers and financial advisers, mean *none* of that is true. That is why we need genuine mixed economies, with taxation measures to balance wealth distribution, a public interest structure, call it government, to exercise some power to achieve public outcomes towards greater equity. It's not simple. Getting the balance right is hard. Yes, it is called Socialism, or more correctly democratic socialism. But the alternative is exactly what we are seeing: oligarchy and autocratic rule by wealth elites, for whom there is never enough wealth and power. Which side are you on?

On reconciling science and religion and people asking him, he tried to distinguish between people's personal truth, and objective scientific truth. He said people can have their own personal truth, but scientific truth is different. My point above is that personal truth can be rubbish. Truth is the wrong word. I say again that I think he doesn't want to offend. He won't even come out and say he is an agnostic or atheist. He always fudges. He is always worried about his "image." All mainstream media is geared to highlighting the crimes of our enemies and ignoring the crimes of our allies and ourselves. I'm long sick of it.
David1955 replies on Oct 18, 2019:
@Triphid The hypocrisy is everywhere. When we -- our allies and we -- kill innocent people, it is collateral damage. When countries we don't like kill, it is a war crime and terrorism. When our enemies kill people on a list, it is foreign assassination. When we do it, it is a 'kill list" of deserving targets. When the Russians interfere in elections, it is an attack on our democracies. When we do to other countries, it is our clever security agencies engaging in essential intelligence operations. When foreign agents are captured by us, they are spies and deserving of the worst. When we place spies in the Kremlin or similar places, and they are outed, it is our clever spooks who got them there in the first place and they are heroes. It doesn't seem to matter how many disastrous wars or interventions we start, how many people die, how appalling the results are, or how unjustified they were, we are always the goods guys and criticism is unpatriotic. The military are always heroes, the agencies are always patriots, and as long as our "intentions" were honorable, it is OK. Well, I call out the despicable acts of despotic regimes, and I also call out our war and espionage crimes. As a student of history, not some unthinking patriot, I can think in no other way. I grew up with the bullshit of Vietnam. I am growing old with the bullshit of 21st Century western self-righteousness.

What we should remember about 9/11 is that Tower 7 was not hit by a plane. Nor was the Pentagon. We should remember that 9/11 was used as an excuse to lie us into two wars against people who had nothing to do with 9/11. The real perpetrators of 9/11 have not been brought to justice.
David1955 replies on Sep 12, 2019:
@Paul4747 if you ever find a photograph or footage of that plane in Washington that day, flying into or approaching the capital of the US, right at the centre of the US military, the Pentagon, I would very much like to see it. One photo. One frame from a security camera. Anything. Sincerely, I would. The supposed footage of the explosion looks nothing like a plane strike. Not one piece of airline wreckage evident. Even in catastrophic plane crashes there remains a wing, an engine, a tail. Nothing. I don't blame people for their suspicion. Surely some indisputable evidence that it was a plane is not too much to ask. @mcgeo52

@FrayedBear Well, look, the simple answer is space and functionality. Phones are too fiddly for serious lengthy work, the screens are small, and I have a galaxy Note (though it's an old one). Actually, the way forward I see is for tablets replacing computers. I recently bought a new Samsung tab and it's great (no ipads or anything Apple any more for me) and it almost replaces a laptop, now there is DEX on it. Almost but not quite. Chromebook combines the ease of use of a laptop with a simpler OS plus Android and now Linux as well. But I can see the possibility of a portable tablet being able to do my needs, with a small detachable keyboard, but not just yet. The Chromebook has the integration of Chrome OS/Android/Linux which I like at the moment. That's the complete answer to your question. If you and others can do it all by phone, that's great. but I'm not able to do that.

@Happy_Killbot Obviously it refers to the regime around Putin and those who support him. Of course, it is true that a virus takes hold when the immune system is weak. In the US that refers to a corrupt political party system, an electoral system that is corrupt, antiquated and anarchic, and exploited by a judicial system all the way up to Supreme Court that allows and strengths electoral malpractice. In that sense, the attack by Putin and co has succeeded by exploiting the US's own weaknesses, its systemic vulnerabilities, that would not have happened had something like a democratic process been put in place and defended. That's the point of Comrade Putin's approach: he identifies and exploits weaknesses. In the US, it's the political weaknesses and the rise of an economic underclass. In the UK feeding the resentment against the EU, though the UK's problems are far deeper. In Europe it's migration and nationalism. Putin has single-mindedly set about to address what he sees as the "injustice' of the fall of the Soviet Union and the "gloating" by the West. He is doing well, sadly. It is the bigger picture that should be seen here.

@Storm1752 You make so many false generalizations about atheism, it's pointless to engage with you. It's you, projecting your own absolute opinions. How many times have I read this stuff here, propelled by the poor site name, agnostic.com. Atheist are and have been the greater number here. I must try to avoid toxic agnosticism on this site.
I am not an atheist.

@Storm1752 "*but you keep insisting we're practicaly cousins, and I wholeheartedly disagree." That is such a sad statement. Only religion wins.

I'm an agnostic atheist. This is because if I tell you with 100 percent certainty that there are no gods it is up to me to produce the evidence. I have none, but you can call yourself whatever you like.

@DenoPenno I am so bored with these attacks by agnostics. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

@Storm1752 You are exactly why I have one more reason not to be an agnostic: I prefer to struggle against religionists, not fellow non-believers.Some agnostics, not all, prefer to argue with atheists. How futile. You are only about the millionth agnostic who has raised this divide here. Futile.
I am not an atheist.

That's just fence sitting. To ask if you're an atheist is to ask your belief not your knowledge. If not having the knowledge precludes your ability to believe then you're an atheist by default. It is a question of belief, not knowledge. These are binary and completely separate questions. Pull up...

@backwardsman Ooh, we believe in all sorts of things. Evidence- based thinking, positive human values... lots of things. Just not Gods for which there is not a scrap of proof. We just think it through and say it.
I am not an atheist.

But we do know: We know *there is no evidence*. Got evidence? Come back and see those of us who are atheists. Til then, we know there is no evidence of *any and all gods*. Is that so hard to understand now?
