The right to make legal and medical decisions regarding one's S/O when said S/O cannot.

Very true! It's one of the most important reasons for gay marriage.

This.... Is huge. Yes.

As somebody who lost 100% power in my fiance's life when he was hospitalized and then died, I agree, this is HUGE. I was "welcomed" at some doctor conversations and others were deemed "just family." His rotten ex (mother of his minor children) and horrid estranged sister were absolutely horrible to me and did everything he didn't want as it related to his service (had it at a Catholic church and he despised the Catholic church; buried him when he wanted to be cremated; and place old pictures of them together -- and they'd been divorced for three years), his belongings (including a classic car he would have wanted his best friend to have, but that didn't happen; and including demanding our joint belongings from OUR home), etc. It was all maddening, heartbreaking and disgusting; and I hope to never go through that again.

Depends on ones definition of marriage. Professionals marrying for convenience, farm kids marrying the first person they kiss, criminals beating delusional systems, jeez.

Marry for love and family or just don't do it. Sometimes I think just having a companion I could relate to would be enough. Then I sleep and wake up wishing someone I adored was there to smile about before we flip a coin to see who makes coffee smile001.gif

..... wait, I’m thinking???? It’s not sex because that’s been better single...Not to raise kids because we are doing that divorced anyway? you better just tell me cause I’m not gonna get it. Was this a trick question?

I use this as an arguement for everything...

In the butthole!

No catch all be all, there are good marriages, there are bad. I’m halfway through my 24th year of it and there have been ups and downs, but overall a quite positive experience. I also have known people who had extremely bad experiences.

You have help entertaining the cats.

Tax breaks, also when you have kids and get divorced it is supervised by the state for the kids benefits, mostly. Otherwise, Buncha BS

AnneWimsey Level 8 July 17, 2018

Ummmmmm, gimme a while and maybe I can come up with something.

Best way by far to bring up kids is with both parents together, marriage strengthens a couple, or should. But few take the vow seriously. I you don't get on, don't have kids, once you do have kids you owe it to them for you both to get on.

Savage Level 7 July 16, 2018

Wow. What a narrow view.

@Minta79 bitter experience and research bring me to this view.

It's probably the best way to raise children. I enjoy my kids.

2 there's.... yeah, I got nothing.

My only reason to marry would be if you plan to have children.

jlynn37 Level 8 July 17, 2018

That's a weak argument. I have four children with my ex husband.
I am having one with my current partner. I refuse to marry for this reason. It solidifies/ensures nothing.

I am more dedicated to this man that I ever was to my ex, even though marriage was involved.

Am I missing a point? I may very well be.

@Donotbelieve Weak perhaps but it is MY reason. I am NOT judging you in any way. You do you, I do me and let's strive to do or cause no harm.

@jlynn37 I wasn't attempting to cause harm. I suppose I really dislike marriage.
Any vitriol is aimed at that and not you.

@Donotbelieve My dear friend, I took no issue at all from your comment. I too am completely against marriage, but only for me and others like me and yourself. We are on the same page here I would think.

@jlynn37 How nice.

I have none.

If I were being highly pragmatic, asset protection. Marriage provides a legal safeguard for a personal you share your life and home with. If for some reason you pass away, you know they have security.

Personally, as a product of Western cultural attitudes, I think marriage holds value as a statement about one’s intentions and responsibilities. Marriage is a promise to trust another more than you can trust yourself.

You can will your assets to anyone you like, married or not.....

@AnneWimsey Good point. I was thinking in debates surrounding gay marriage for example as well, just as a means of minimising fuss. But fair enough.

Health insurance. That’s pretty much it

Marcie1974 Level 8 July 16, 2018

It is a real commitment.

Sticks48 Level 9 July 16, 2018

I am sure arguments vary a lot depending upon circumstances. Young? First time in love? ....and many many different scenarios. Anyhow, read most responses, well that was an eye opener, to say the least....

IamNobody Level 8 July 17, 2018

It shuts up most parents.
Helps protect legal rights of parents in case of children.
Tells your friends/ family to stop hitting on your significant other...

That's all I got. Marriage is a bad idea. Horrible, just horrible.

Lifestone Level 5 July 17, 2018

Sometimes it hightens the hitting on and some parents NEVER shut up.

Um, you get to wear a big white gown that makes you look like a layer cake,?

bleurowz Level 8 July 17, 2018

And go into debt free or two to pay for that gown.

Tax breaks

It's not like couples can take each other to court for child support should it be required, nope. I have to add on another coconut layer of bureaucratic nightmare to hold my partner hostage in case they get any wild ideas that don't include dragging me along with them.

Power of Attorneys are great and all, but I'd rather spend what is basically the cost of four, week long, badass, honeymoons. Just so we can show off to family members we haven't seen in decades how snazzy I look in my rented tux, and how beautiful she looks in a dress that's two car payments in value that gets worn once. Also all this money is basically for one day! Let's not get my friend who's done photography for years, Nah! Let's hire the one the wedding planner suggests that costs basically a 150% markup, but hey! open bar! woo! that...we...paid...for.....crap... Oh I almost forgot!

Lets not forget the artificially inflated, but otherwise value-less, compressed, shiny, glittery, clear, rock thing held in place on top of gold shaped rings we get to trade off as we both silently weep at the complete financial loss they are.

fyi- Satire, obviously.

You are wildly optimistic about the price of a wedding dress, friend..."2 car payments" if the car is a Lamborghini, maybe....or a Rolls? Naw, 4-5 payments, minimum.

Sounds pretty spot on to me. ?

I suspect that most marriages last longer than live together arrangements, but I have nothing to back that up. For myself, I am done with marriage.

Carin Level 8 July 16, 2018

@PDF Wow! That is a HUGE difference!

I used to think it indicated a stronger sense of commitment to each other. Living together you can choose whether to work hard at resolving problems, otherwise it's a lot easier to leave than a marriage is. Now I'm not so sure. Being old fashioned though, I do think it's better if you have kids.
