Tell me about a time you got stitches or had a broken bone. Do you have any bones that have broken more than once?

My right arm was broken and not set when I was a baby so it has a slight bow. I broke my right shin bone in 5th grade. I had stitches above my right eye from looking at a windshield way the fuck too close. I also got stitches in my right knee from that accident.

Looking at a windshield too closely? During a crash?

@JenBeberstein Yup, I pushed it about 6 inches out but didn't go through.

@sewchick57 ouch!

Do surgical stitches count? I fell on ice last December and massively f-cked up my right wrist. Cracked a bone and damaged two ligaments, requiring a surgical fix in May.
The surgery itself involved breaking a bone (well, sawing a slice out of it) and a bunch of stitches where they went in to repair.

Surgical stitches definitely count!

@JenBeberstein I realized from your question that I don’t even know how many I got!

I have a saying... It isn't a really good project unless I burn, bleed or have stitches...

Never a broken bone... But I couldn't begin to count the stitches...

You have a refreshingly positive attitude about hurting yourself!

I got the stitches from an appendectomy in 1989, so the scar is half a mile long, the second set was from forgetting to let go whilst throwing a large piece of glass. The broken bones came from riding a bmx down a steep hill while telling my childhood friend 'Watch this! It's fun!'

Was it fun?

@JenBeberstein
It was until I landed. 😛

Had cauda equina, two C sections, in addition to lots of stitches. I took out my own once on my leg in Hong Kong. Have had tons of broken bones, broken nose, wrists, elbow, hand. I'm still here though.

I've broken my nose countless times. It has a permanent bend in it which causes some drainage problems and frequent sinus infections. A doctor told me he could fix it but he would have to break it first, I'll keep the bend!

Larger brother decided that since I was in wrestling (4th grade), I should be able to beat him. While rough-housing, my right hand was positioned on the floor for support when he shoved the elbow forward and broke 3 fingers.

Older siblings can really suck sometimes!

First stiches in second grade. Poked a hole in my upper leg on a rusty post. 1962 and my Mother took me to "Old" Doc Hellum whose son, "Young" Doc Hellum, was in his 60's. Old Doc used sulfer to clean the wound and that hurt like hell. Still have a scar there. Sewed in an L.

I have never had a wound cleaned with sulphur. I didn't even know that was a thing!

20 stitches from a slicing machine, broken ankle and arm...

Ouch.

What did the machine slice (besides you)?

@Beowulfsfriend really I felt No pain..though I did bleed alot.. ?

@JenBeberstein ..onions mostly, it was a restaurant kitchen.

I wish I could put down multiple answers
Let me tell you about that time I fell down the stairs.
It was a sudden gust of gravity, and I broke a rib in the process.
Or about the time I was working on a semi and an air jack blew out.
Hit me right between the Lookers, stitches a broken nose and a cracked skull.
Good thing it had something I don't use, my head.

Landed on my head in my motorcycle accident. Full face shield and helmet saved my face and teeth. I no longer ride. Not if, but when for an accident. Did little damage then though. Went to the hospital for a concussion; they tied me to a board and took tons of xrays, etc. Said I was okay and could leave. To which I asked, what about the concussion I walked in knowing I had (Ex coach taught concussion protocol). Ohhhhh. Just don t sleep for a while and avoid bright lights.

You can answer as many times as you'd like!

Stitches multiple times. Broke my wrist playing basketball in high school.

I have always been clumsy, so I will only regale you with the most recent breaks. I was walking my dog on a beautiful October afternoon, daydreaming and admiring the autumn colors when I tripped over an uneven block in the sidewalk. I managed to land on my rib cage. I could hear the bones breaking. (If you've ever broken a chicken breast to get to the meat, that's the sound,) There was a guy down the street walking toward me when I fell, but he stopped and watched me sit up, then stand up and get the dog. I was clutching my side, but when he went past he didn't make eye contact. I hurried home because i remember from first responder training that I only had a short window where I wouldn't feel how badly hurt I was. I got home and got into a night gown and sat down when the worst pain I can remember hit. (I've had 23 surgeries and numerous broken bones and injuries, but this was the worst.) I didn't go into the hospital because they don't strap or tape any more. I did call the office and the nurse asked how much pain killer I had from my last surgery. When I told her she said, "that's not enough". I initially thought she was kidding. I had to just sit for six weeks, taking oxycodone. I tried once or twice to quit but the pain drove me right back. Fortunately I don't become addicted to the stuff or I'd be in big trouble.

I have heard that ribs are the most painful bones to break! So sorry you went through that!

@JenBeberstein Thanks. I have decided that if you really want revenge on someone, don't kill them, just break all their ribs. (Just kidding)

@ladyprof70 brilliant!

War story day, huh?
Broke my arm, collar bone, and left leg twice in the same place, 7 years apart. More stitches than I remember. But I'm still healthy.

Not willing to share the details about how you were injured?

@JenBeberstein
Sure but these aren't interesting to other people much, as far as i know. Broke my arm riding my bike to school in 8th grade while carrying books and riding no-handed. I denied it was broken, spent that day in school and didnt get it set until afternoon.
Collar bone was falling through a stair hole covered by plastic on a jobsite in Raleigh. 10' down to a concrete floor.
First leg was sliding down a snow field into a pile of rocks in RMNP CO. I was backpacking with a couple friends. We were 5 miles in. Denied it was broken again, spent a night in tents and tried to hike on it the next day, It woulldn't take weight so one friend went and got a ranger who came back with two horses and let me ride one out.
Broke the same leg in the same place hiking in winter at night alone near Lyons. CO. slid down a frozen waterfall and cracked it at the bottom when I hit. Crawled/crab-walked ~2 miles back to home.
Looking at a map later I realized I had crawled out of "Deadman's Gulch."
Routine stuff. (-;

@CallMeDave sounds like you have a pretty adventurous life!

Stiches,rolled out of bed hit the floor about the age of 6,neighbor took mom and me to the ER where my chin was stitched up. Broken bones; In my left arm from falling off a 5ft wall,was in a cast in the 4th grade at School,before the accident,could sign my name with either hand ,but became right hand dominate, due to the cast on the left arm.

Did you ever try to regain the ability to write with your left hand?

@JenBeberstein no,never really thought of doing that when younger,was reading a child must decide on which hand should dominate early

For the broken bone, I was jumping up and down on a fold out bed. I fell and caught my arm under the frame and broke my ulna in several places and dislocated the radius. My boy scout brother set my arm while we were on the way to the base infirmary. The doctor looked at my arm and said, "I don't think it's broken," and proceeded to give it a twist. The bones fell apart. My dad ardently insisted, "You'd better be able to fix that."

As for the stitches, I ran track in high school. I've always been obese. At 250 pounds, I ran the 100 meters dash in just shy of twelve seconds. One day, I was running and a tear pushed me to the side of the track. The adrenaline kept the pain at bay. My knee began to swell and turn purple. I was taken to the hospital and they took me into surgery. The medial meniscus had torn in two and was frayed. The arthoscopic surgery was nothing really. The real trouble is when they had to move my knee cap back over. I can't remember the number of stitches involved, but I do remember them breaking when I fell while wearing the knee imobilizer. They restitched the wound. Not the best day at the track.

Both of those injuries sound terribly painful!

@JenBeberstein It was nothing like a woman giving birth.

@Gohan that doesn't mean that it wasn't a very bad experience!

@JenBeberstein Oh, it was seeing stars bad.

I had a motorcycle accident once. The bike got away from me as I pulled out of a driveway making a quick left turn, and the rear wheel lost traction of a rock. The bike came down on my boot, and dislocated the big toe on my left foot. The end joint was turned straight up pointing at the sky. I went to a clinic and the doctor pulled it straight and said it will be OK, go home and have a six pack. I followed his prescription totally.

Years later, walking a few blocks rubbed a blister on my left big toe, under the second section of toe, the same one I dislocated some 20 years earlier. It wouldn't heal. I went to one podiatrist, who shaved the callous from the "ulcer," and said come back next week. That continued for a couple of months, and he said. I should see another podiatrist, who put pins in my big toe so the joint would fuse. People walk on the ball of their big toe, but mine, having been dislocated, just flopped up and down, and didn't provide any help walking. After the toe-joint fused, I walked properly on the ball of my toe, and the ulcer healed.

All this occurred with no stitches. I did have a vascetomy and got stitches, and other times.

Vasectomy question: two sets of stiches or one? Procedure done two ways. I'm a two sticher.

You make a good point (in your other comment) about when, not if you crash!

@Beowulfsfriend Honestly, I do not know. It's been a long time since that procedure, perhaps 45 years.

The only time I have had stitches was after childbirth. I expected to need stitches when I had my tubal ligation, but the surgeon glued me shut! I broke the 3 middle metatarsals in my right foot when I was 20. I jumped off a low tree branch, my toes landed on solid ground and my heel sunk into a gopher trail. I heard and felt them break, later confirmed by x-ray imaging.

Stitches from laying football with a pillow over my face as a 6 yr old in the living room and ran into the wall with my head...still have the scar 56 years later.

I was accidentally shot in the abdomen almost 4 years ago.

Care to share the story behind that? Seems pretty major....to just post this as an after-thought?

@RPardoe, it was April 5, 2015 (Easter.) We had lots of family over, but I was sleeping because I worked nights. One person thought a gun was unloaded and thought they were dry cycling...whoops! It went through my bedroom wall and into my abdomen. I woke up to a crazy intense pain, but I don't remember hearing anything so I have no idea what happened. I thought my appendix had burst or something. The person who fired the shot came in apologizing. I still didn't know what happened. I couldn't figure out why he was apologizing. Fast forward...

My dad saw the hole in my jeans. I got up to get a towel to press on the wound. I know...you're not supposed to move...etc. Then I asked for something to drink. 911 was called. I was taken by ambulance. They examined me and decided to do exploratory surgery to make sure no fragments were too close to my colon.

All in all it was basically a deep flesh wound. It had to be cleaned and repacked daily until it healed

@Cabsmom Glad to read it was (in the words of the Black Knight) "just a flesh wound".

@RPardoe, yeah...it could have been much worse. AND because of my kick ass insurance I only paid $75 for EVERYTHING...hospital, surgery,home health care. Plus, I was out of work for 5 weeks and got paid 60% for four weeks of that.

1

I had one stitch in my lip as a toddler. I had staples and stitches for my caeserean. I had a few for exploratory abdominal surgery after an injury.

I've never broken a bone.

1

Separated a shoulder, but never a broken bone. (Bike crash).

Stitches on forehead when school prank pulled on me backfired as my forehead slammed into the metal edge of a desk.

Stitches on chin as a result of falling chin first off a three speed bike.

Remembered one more set of stitches.....when I was in my 30s, I recall removing left over sutures from my circumcision. I suspect the sutures were supposed to dissolve naturally, but these were more in the skin (less vascular). Had a couple of bumps but managed to pull out about 1/4" of suture from both of them.....

1

Stitches and a broken bone, two separate cycling accidents thirty years apart.

Do you still cycle?

@JenBeberstein absolutely! Two surgeries and a concussion later, I still have to ride.

@pashaonenine that's awesome!

[sh1.webring.com] somehow the page is all squooshed and i am not sure why but i am really sick right now and not inclined to fix it. sorry. it's still legible i think.

Never broke a bone and the only time I had stitches I was 4 or 5 years old and I don't even remember.

Very nice to have never broken a bone!

1

Last time was probably when I had back surgery. Before that when I broke my leg.

Ouch!
